"The
Full Monty"
AmericaJR.com
has teamed up with the Wayne State University Department of
Theatre to give you the chance to win a pair of tickets to
see "The Full Monty." It opens on April 15 and runs
throgh April 24.
This musical follows the playful mischief of six unemployed
steelworkers from Buffalo, who bare it all to earn some much
needed cash. Their passion for life, over the course of numerous
show-stopping numbers, helps them find renewed self-esteem,
deeper friendship and heartwarming moments that remind them
of what it means to be alive.
Wanting to make the story relevant to today’s headlines,
Director Michael Barnes highlights the city of Detroit throughout
the play. According to Barnes, “the men in this show
are the blue collar workers who are down on their luck. The
people of Detroit can really connect with the messages presented
in this story.” Barnes encourages his cast to take risks
and bare it all on stage. He wants the audience to recognize
and sympathize with these characters; one of them could be
their neighbor.
The
production team was equally ambitious in its approach to the
musical. Another bold aspect to the production derives from
Scenic Designer Jacee Rohlck’s choice to rent the 14-feet
by 16-feet The Full Monty sign. A staple in the show, Rohlck
decided to rent the 400-light-bulb sign from the Weathervane
Playhouse in Akron, Ohio. Rohlck said, “the entire show
leads up to the final moment in the play and the sign is a
must. It adds an extra element of flash and pizzazz.”
She has also incorporated aspects of Detroit factories into
the set to aid in the realization of Barnes’ Detroit
motif.
