Thursday, 19 January, 2012 0:04 AM 'American Idiot' is a knockout hit at the Detroit Opera House
DETROIT -- The 21st Century punks invaded the Detroit Opera House last night. It was media night for the musical "American Idiot" based upon the music of the band Green Day. The musical has a cult following. The crowd was younger than most events held at this venue. This was a Fisher Theatre event being held at the Detroit Opera House due to the larger stage being needed. Otherwise this show would not have come to Detroit. Some of the songs you'll recognize in this new musical include “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” and “Holiday.” Green Day's latest single, "21st Century Breakdown," is also included in the score. The story is about three friends who are embarking on turning 21 and heading out into the world. One is unable to go since his girlfriend got pregnant he decided to stay back to be with her. The other two head out, one falls in love with a woman and gets addicted to drugs while the other one goes into the service and comes back with a leg blown off. They all eventually come back home to find that the one who had the baby lost his wife and kid, as she fell for another man. Billy Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer wrote the book for "American Idiot." Mayer also serves as the director of the musical as well. Steven Hoggett is the choreographer while Tom Kitt handles the music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements. Catch this one soon as it runs thru Jan. 22nd at the Detroit Opera House. Ticket prices for the Detroit engagement of AMERICAN IDIOT range from $25-$75 (includes facility fees) and are on sale now at the Fisher Theatre box office and all Ticketmaster locations.
