'American Idiot' is a must-see for all Green Day fans at the Detroit Opera House
The cast of "American Idiot"
DETROIT -- Green Day's "American Idiot" the Broadway musical, comes to the Detroit Opera House for one weekend only, January 31, February 1 and 2nd. This is a one-act musical about three young men who are buddies: Johnny, (played by Jared Nepute); Will (played by Casey O'Farrell); and Tunny (played by Dan Tracy) who look for the meaning of life. Johnny and Tunny flee their boring suburban lifestyle to a big city looking for excitement. Will, who drinks, does drugs and sits on the couch all day, stays behind to care for his pregnant girlfriend.
Tunny gives up on life and quickly joins the military. He immediately is shipped off to war. Johnny sees a girl in an apartment window in the big city and longs for her affection. City life makes him shoot heroin for the first time and tells his mom about it. He wanders around the city and the drug allows Johnny to make a successful move on the girl in the window. He eventually spends the night with her. She is called "Whatsername." (played by Olivia Puckett) They go to a club and shoot drugs together and he has passionate sex with her.
Johnny eventually realizes his life is wasted and it's time to wake up. He gets a desk job but figures that the city is not for him. He sells his guitar for a ticket to go back home. Will, sees Johnny at the 7-Eleven and Tunny arrives back from the war zone as an amputee. They all meet up after not seeing each other for one year.
After the cast takes their bows, the curtain rises with the entire cast with their guitars singing "Good riddance-(I hope you have the Time of your Life.) If you are a fan of Green Day, this is a must see. In the beginning, the three buddies take different roads in life but end up back together in the end.
The show features a lot of f-bombs, drug and alcohol use and middle finger usage. Need I say more, it is for adults only. However, the music was great. Some songs include "Wake me up when September ends," "Too much too soon" and "Time of your Life."
