"Bee Season"
Drama and Kids/Family
This is a movie about
an ordinary Jewish family who seems to be consumed
by each individual interests. Richard Gere (Saul) and Juliette Binoche
(Miriam) are so involved in their work that when their daughter,
Eliza,
wins her school spelling bee, no one notices.
She, in turn, thinks
that no one is interested. When her brother Aaron finally speaks
up, the family is apologetic and then is very interested. They get
out the
dictionary and practices with her and learns about Jewish mysticism.
The
story is slow moving until she eventually wins the state competition
and
moves on to the national competition in Washington D.C.
During the course of
the movie, some hidden secrets about the mother
appear. It was very confusing. There were flashbacks regarding the
mother's past. Eliza thinks that her family is falling apart and
its
all her fault. She tries to bring them back together unsuccessfully.
It is rated PG-13. The
movie is 1 hour and 44 minutes long. It was released on November
11th to limited theatres. It was filmed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylavania
and in Oakland, California.
It is a slow drama and
its not one of Richard Gere's best movies. I would
not recommend it.
