After delving into
the world of genetics on Mutant X, creator
and executive producer Peter Mohan returns to the world of sci-fi/fantasy/horror
once more with Blood Ties. Adapted from
a popular series from author Tanya Huff, it follows Victoria "Vicki"
Nelson (Christina Cox), who left the force due to her failing
eyesight and becomes a private investigator/reluctant "warrior
princess", as she fights supernatural crimes in Toronto.
Aiding her is on/off boyfriend and former partner, Det. Mike Celluci
(Dylan Neal, Dawson's Creek); graphic
comic-book artist Henry Fitzroy (Kyle Schmid), the illegitimate
son of Henry VIII -- and a 480-year vampire, and her assistant
Coreen (Gina Holden, Flash Gordon).
Season one (13 episodes) of Blood Ties
follows their battle against evil, as they deal with zombies,
Medusa, an incubus, ghosts, the Wendigo, and much more. Extras
on the four-disc DVD set includes a behind-the-scenes look into
the series with interviews from the cast, Peter Mohan, and author
Tanya Huff, plus a bonus trailer. Lifetime picked up the series
and aired it during the winter and fall of 2007, but decided not
to renew the series for a third season in May of last year. However,
episodes can still be found online at http://www.mylifetime.com/on-tv/full-episodes/blood-ties/video/.
It was stated by Wikipedia that in November 2008, Kaleidoscope
Entertainment, Inc., the Canadian company that produces Blood
Ties (www.bloodtiestv.com),
was still looking for production partners in bringing the series
back, but may be unlikely of its return due to how long it took
for it to be filmed. However, the show is currently in syndication
in several countries across the world, as fans are still campaigning
in bringing Blood Ties back for another
season; if a fan that has your heart pumping for more, go to this
fansite at www.bloodtiescentral.com.
Blood Ties needs to come back, for it
fills the void that was left by Forever Knight, Buffy,
the Vampire Slayer, Angel and The X-Files,
as the heart of the show (literally) is the budding love triangle
between Mike, Vicki, and Henry: the heroine in love with the day
and the night -- the good guy and the bad boy. Who will Vicki
choose is the eternal question, as season one of Blood
Ties comes to Canada and America June 2.
