BREA, Calif. -- After covering the MAVTV 500 race in Fontana, I had a sweet tooth and thought I’d stop by Farrell’s to try their world-famous ice cream. My parents told me that there used to be a Farrell’s Ice Cream Shoppe on Telegraph Road just north of Schoolcraft in Detroit, but it closed. Several hundred of their restaurants closed after the chain was sold off a couple of times, leaving only a handful in southern California. Now the restaurant is owned by Parlour Enterprises and is expanding again with a new Farrell’s in Buena Park.

The restaurant looks like an old-fashioned diner with wooden booths, stained-glass lamps hanging from the ceiling and t-shirts on the walls. Guests can dine at the counter, at a table or at a booth. All menu items are available for take out. Also inside is a gift shop with old-fashioned candies, teddy bears and toys for the little ones. The entire crew wears red-and-white paper hats.

I ordered two scoops of ice cream—mint chip and vanilla with caramel on top and a waffle cone. The waffle cone was placed upside down on top of my ice cream scoops. It had to be the best ice cream I ever had. The ice cream was better than anything you can find in the grocery store.

On your birthday, ice cream sundaes are complimentary. It gets very noisy inside because the entire crew sings “Happy Birthday” to guests celebrating at Farrell’s. I don’t mean just sing…they have a full band and everything with drums. So this place is perfect for families, but not recommended for seniors who may not like the loud noises. Just about every five minutes somebody was celebrating something – a birthday, anniversary or some other occasion.

The Brea location holds an ice cream eating challenge known as its Splendiferously Superific Summer Spectacular each year. Qualifications are held in June and July with the main event taking place toward the end of July. Awards will be handed out for the World’s Fastest and Best Ice Cream Eaters. Proceeds benefit CHOC Children’s® and Make-A-Wish®.

Even though Farrell’s is best known for their ice cream, they have a full menu. The restaurant also offers burgers, sandwiches, appetizers, soups and salads. For the adults, there is also beer and wine available. Prices start at $5 and go up to $59.99, which is for the Hot Fudge Volcano. That comes with 30 scoops of ice cream with hot fudge, whipped cream, sprinkles and cherries on top. Single scoops of ice cream can be ordered for $2.99, double scoops for $3.99 and triple scoops for $4.99. You get the idea.

I really enjoyed my visit to Farrell’s in Brea. It definitely lived up to the hype. When I asked for a glass of ice water, my waitress said they ran out. Haha. The service was fast and friendly. I strongly encourage you to stop by Farrell’s with your family or friends the next time you are in Southern California. You won’t be disappointed!

Farrell’s recently opened a new location in Buena Park just one block from Knott’s Berry Farm.
