ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- We stopped at Firehouse Subs in Ann Arbor for a quick bite and found it to be quite interesting.
The decor has firehouse equipment on the walls and pictures of fire trucks. The tables are white with black spots sort of dalmatian-like. I found the place to be firehouse inspired which is very different.
We ordered the King's Hawaiian Pork and Slaw Sandwich, which is back by popular demand and for a limited time only. The Combo was $8.98 which included pop and your choice of chips. The sandwich only was $6.59. Their menu consists of Chief's Salad, Firehouse Chili and hot specialty subs. The names of their subs include Hook & Ladder Sub, which is turkey breast, ham and cheese; the Firehouse meatball; the New York Steamer Sub; the Firehouse Steak and Cheese; the Engineer Sub which is smoked turkey breast, melted swiss, and sauteed mushrooms; the Firehouse "Hero" Sub which is premium roast beef, smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham, and melted cheese. Another favorite is the Smokehouse Beef and Cheddar Brisket, which is USDA choice beef brisket smoked for 16 plus hours, melted cheddar and special sauces. Their menu also includes other hot and cold subs.
The prices range from $5.99 for the salad, $3.89 for the chili, all the subs are from $5.29 to $6.29. They also of fer catering with sub platters, salad platters, dessert platters and box lunches.
Hurricane Katrina's wrath inspired the founders to establish the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation in 2005. Since then, donations have resulted in millions of dollars in life-saving tools, technology, and training to local fire, police and EMS.
At the restaurant there are five-gallon pickle buckets patrons can purchase and you will be donating to the Foundation. You can use the pickle buckets for painting, gardening, washing the car, building sand castles or just about anything. There are also donation canisters near the cash registers. Any small change or spare change will help our hometown heroes.
I loved the place and if you are in the area of Ann Arbor, Brighton or Grand Rapids, please stop in and give them a try. There are several more locations coming soon such as East Lansing, Mt. Pleasant, Roseville, Sterling Heights, Waterford and West Bloomfield.
The Ann Arbor location is: 609 E. William between State Street and Maynard.
