NORTHVILLE, Mich. -- We visited the Garage Grill and Fuel Bar in downtown Northville today. I thought it was an interesting place both outside and inside. This restaurant is a fully restored 1940 circa gas station.

Built in 1940, first it was a Gulf Oil service station, then became a Sunoco gas station, then a Chrysler car dealership, a dry cleaner and a garden shop. In 2012, the building was completely restored and transformed into the Garage Grill and Fuel Bar. A short walk near the restaurant is housing, specialty shops, galleries, theaters, restaurants and businesses.

We got their about 4:45 p.m. on a Friday and it was fairly empty. However, by after 5 p.m. it filled up fast.

We ordered the house salad which was excellent. It included fresh greens, cucumber, red onion, tomatoes, sunflower seeds, cranberries with a champagne vinaigrette. Rolls also came with the meal. Then, we ordered the build-your-own pizza. We chose ham and mushroom as toppings. I was amazed at how good that was. It was excellent.

Our waitress was most helpful, very friendly and catered to our every need. The service was impeccable.

The decor of the Garage was art deco and very modern with nice lighting and candles with nuts and bolts inside the glass holder. There was a very large mural of automobiles on the wall. On a hot summer day, they roll up the garage doors and the seating is breezy like you are sitting outdoors. They also have umbrellas around the front of the building, so you can sit and eat outdoors if you want.

In the rear of the building, there is a banquet room that seats 80 for any occasion such as bridal showers, baby showers, etc. There is a bar section next to the restaurant area.

I would definitely recommend this restaurant. The location is prime, the food is great and the service is friendly.

Overall Rating: A
