Juan’s Hacienda
is the type of restaurant that your friends tell you
about.
We like to try new places, especially if there are margaritas
specials
involved ($2.75 for 12 oz.), so one Friday evening we ventured
down to the
place. Almost overlit, we were surprised at the brightness inside.
Megan, the hostess,
busser, and all around informational person, told us
that we would have to wait for a smoking table and that there
wouldn’t be
one any time soon. We opted for the non-smoking section, since
the bar was
small and looked like it was merely an oversight crammed inside.
She told
us
that we could switch when one became available, which we did
soon after
ordering our margaritas. This was no easy feat because by then
we had a
large basket of warm and freshly made chips, 2 strengths of
salsa, and
pico
de gallo.
The menu at Juan’s
is quite extensive, with all the staple Mexican dishes,
as well as original dishes such as Mexican Kabobs, Carne de
Puerco (pork
stew), and Flour Tacos. Most of them are in the $7.50 - $11.95
price
range,
and they also have American fare and a child’s menu that
includes
dinosaurs,
which our server Kathy explained were chicken nuggets that are
not only a
fave with kids but teach them to play with their food.
Why is it that no
matter which Mexican restaurant you choose, their
fajitas
are considered the best by any one of innumerable Detroit newspapers?
Nonetheless, since my dining companion prefers chicken and I
prefer steak,
we opted for the 2-fer because we could get both for $18.95,
as opposed to
one for $13.95. Unfortunately, we had to order sour cream and
guacamole
separately,
but fajitas are not fajitas without them.
The ambience at Juan’s
is incredible. Not only do all the staff and
customers relate to each other comfortably, when Kathy brought
our dish
out,
set it aflame, and uttered “Ole”, another table
asked us what we were
having
as if they were in our party. Because their meals are freshly
made, some
of
the dishes take longer, but they graciously allow customers
to pick
whatever
sport they want to watch on one of several TVs while waiting.
Talk about large
portions! This plate was huge, with chunks of steak,
chicken, tomatoes, onions, and green peppers covered with now
slightly
wilted lettuce and melted cheese. We also got a large plate
of beans and
rice and tortillas. Although we sat at a table for four, it
took a bit of
juggling to fit it all in.
Not quite spicy enough
for my taste, the fajitas were still yummy and by
the
time we had finished our meal, we had half of it left. Our two
doggy boxes
contained enough leftovers for at least another large meal.
We estimated
it
to be around thetwo pound mark.
Juan’s Hacienda
also has lunch specials, take-out, gift certificates,
caters, welcomes private parties, and a good time had by all
is
guaranteed.
We can’t wait to return to check out those kabobs.
