DETROIT
— Lee DeWyze will perform from his debut album “Live
it Up” Friday at Campus Martius Park as part of the free 4th
Fridays in the Park entertainment series. Presented by Real Detroit
and WDVD 96.3 FM, the 2010 American Idol winner visits Detroit at
the end of his first national headlining tour. Immediately before
DeWyze performs, one lucky Detroiter will win the honor of opening
for the American Idol after a panel of judges and audience members
declare the first Campus Martius Park Idol winner. The finals start
at 8:30 PM and DeWyze takes the stage at 9:15 PM.
New to 4th Fridays this year is comedy during Happy Hour (4:30-7
PM), presented by Real Detroit and Marketing Associates. Joey’s
Comedy Club presents “Stand Up in Detroit,” hosted by
Garri Madera and featuring Andrew O’Neal, Jeff Scheen, Dora
Badger, Jeff Conolly and Sam White. The comedy follows "Detroit
Trivia" by Inside Detroit (4:30 PM) and the featured music
act, The Saints of Soul, “the hardest-hittin’, funk-bringin’,
horn-driven soul band around.”
Fourth Fridays in the Park events continue to build thereafter with
the Ralphe Armstrong Show: His music, his city, his friends—a
live stream production celebrating the music and influences Detroit
brings to the world featuring musical performances by Ralphe and
his band, ID (International Detroiters), special guest artists and
interviews. The evening wraps up at midnight after the film "This
is It" (2009), a testament to one of America's greatest talents,
Michael Jackson.
“With its superb
landscape, spectacular fountain and the surroundings of the downtown
Detroit skyline, Campus Martius Park is a truly unique entertainment
venue,” said Howard Hertz, President of the Detroit Music
Awards (DMA). “This year’s Summer in the Park entertainment
series is peppered with incredible variety that will appeal to even
the most fickle music fan.”
Additional musical acts
that will perform at the Park this summer are ensembles from the
Detroit Jazz Festival Summer Institute with jazz master drummer
Jeff “Tain” Watts (Aug. 26). The YMCA of Metropolitan
Detroit presents Healthy Moves, with Tai Chi 5:30-6:30 PM on Tuesdays,
June 14-Aug. 23 and Yoga 9-10 AM on Saturdays, June 18- Aug. 27.
