2010 Parade Fun Facts: Did You Know?

Get Ready for the 84th America's Thanksgiving Parade

Co-Grand Marshals slated to attend the parade on Nov. 25:

  • Dick Purtan -- Regarded as one of the country’s most respected, revered and recognized air personalities, Purtan recently retired after entertaining and waking up Detroiters on his morning radio show for the past 45 years (the last 14 at CBS Radio Detroit’s 104.3 WOMC). Purtan is also known for his community involvement having raised millions of dollars for numerous local charitable causes close to his heart.
  • Anthony (Tony) Earley, Jr. -- This year marks Earley’s 16th year as a member of the Distinguished Clown Corps, a group of corporate and community leaders who trade in their business suits for clown suits all to benefit America’s Thanksgiving Parade®. Thanks to his leadership, DTE Energy is one of the longest running sponsors of The Michigan Thanksgiving Parade Foundation.

Celebrities slated to attend the parade on Nov. 25:

  • Jana Kramer -- Actress, One Tree Hill and Rochester, Michigan native

Refurbished floats scheduled to appear in the parade on Nov. 25:

  • Three Little Pigs sponsored by Flame Furnace
  • Jazz on Hart Plaza sponsored by the Detroit International Jazz Festival
  • Princess Fairytale sponsored by the Princess Scholarship Program

 

New Paper-mache head of Bo Schembechler will also make its debut in this year's parade.

 

New specialty unit of the Roller Skating Coney Dogs will make its debut in this year's parade.

 

Parade goers are encouraged to check out “Parade Plaza” on Thanksgiving morning, a new tented area along the America’s Thanksgiving Parade® route that will provide parade goers with an even more magical and interactive entertainment experience on parade day. Parade Plaza, a free and heated tent, will be located in Grand Circus Park and open from 7 a.m. – noon on Thanksgiving Day. Parade Plaza is a great new addition to all the fun and excitement along the Parade route on Thanksgiving morning, Families and children can enjoy free giveaways, fun activities, meet and greets with parade characters and much more.

 

Official Vehicles for the 84th America’s Thanksgiving Parade® will be donated by the Southfield, Telegraph and Genesee Valley Dodge Chrysler Jeep dealerships.

 

ROAD CLOSURES

The following streets will be closed beginning at 6 a.m. on Thursday for the Turkey Trot:

  • Fort Street from Shelby to Woodward
  • Congress from Shelby to Randolph
  • Larned from Shelby to Randolph
  • Shelby from Fort to Jefferson
  • Michigan from Vernor to Woodward
  • Monroe from Woodward to Randolph
  • Lafayette Blvd. from Washington Blvd. to Griswold
  • Washington from Adams to Civic center
  • Atwater from Bates to Third
  • Rosa Parks from Michigan to Howard

In addition, watch out for these closures:

  • Southbound Lodge Freeway exit to Larned will be closed from 7 - 9:30 a.m.
  • Shelby will be converted to one way southbound from Michigan to Larned.
  • Michigan Avenue and Washington Blvd. will reopen after the Turkey Trot at approximately 9:05 a.m.
