DETROIT – The Parade Company’s 29th Annual Fifth Third Turkey Trot, Michigan’s largest 10K run, is open for registration and paced for record numbers this year. After setting a record of more than 17,000 runners/walkers in 2010, Parade Company race organizers anticipate 20,000 participants for 2011. The race also includes the 6th Annual S3 (Strategic Staff Solutions) Stuffing Strut (5K) and 9th Annual Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Mashed Potato Mile. The Fifth Third Turkey Trot kicks off the festivities on Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit prior to America’s Thanksgiving Parade® on Thursday, November 24 at 7:30 a.m.

“We are thrilled to support this outstanding community tradition and be a part of its dramatic growth for nearly a decade,” said Jack Riley, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Fifth Third Bank. “The Turkey Trot brings together competitive runners from across Michigan, novices and just fun-loving people who want to play a special part in the celebration of America’s Thanksgiving Parade®.”

Exciting elements for this year’s Fifth Third Turkey Trot include:

  • Strategic Staffing Solutions will have a new “running” float for the race named “Car Full of Fun-Loving Cats and Dogs” – pushed entirely by runners!
  • The return of the first-ever “running” float – Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s giant picnic basket of healthy food float
  • The “Gobbler Fest” – a pre-race party and dinner for just $15 on Wednesday, November 23 from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Marriott at the Renaissance Center. The Marriott will also offer hotel discounts and donate a percentage to The Parade Company.
  • New cheer stations along the route at Michigan Ave. and Rosa Parks
  • A three wave start, “Fast, Fit & Fun,” will help runners and walkers have a smooth start to each race
  • Runners’ bib numbers will include a timing device, which eliminates the need for a timing chip in a shoe
  • Registration and packet pick up will be available at nine satellite locations from November 5 – 19. A full list can be found at www.theparade.org
  • Celebrity personalities judge runners in costume – prizes awarded to the most creative costumes
  • Detroit’s Canine to Five will have doggy water stops
  • Runners can have their race time posted directly to Facebook and text messages sent to friends and family
“We are extremely grateful to Fifth Third for their support. Together we continue to grow this community-focused race which is the perfect way to kickoff and celebrate the city’s most cherished annual event, America’s Thanksgiving Parade®,” said Tony Michaels, President and CEO, The Parade Company.

The runners who dress-up and participate in the Turkey Trot will be judged by local celebrity personalities on the creativity of their costumes. To rent a costume from The Parade Company, call 313.432.7835. Judging will take place before the race at 7 a.m. at One Woodward Avenue across from the Spirit of Detroit. Prizes will be awarded to the runners with the most creative costumes.

Entries received before November 19 are $21 each for the Mashed Potato Mile and $36 each for the Turkey Trot and Stuffing Strut. Entries received November 20 through race day remain $21 each for the Mashed Potato Mile, but increase to $41 each for Turkey Trot and Stuffing Strut. Registrations are accepted on race day at Cobo Center. Participants can register online at www.theparade.org or by calling the Turkey Trot Hotline at 313.247.4149.

The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center is offering a special Turkey Trot rate at $95.00 with $5.00 from every room being donated to The Parade Company. To reserve a room, call 1-800-352-0831 and mention “Turkey Trot” or visit detroitmarriott.com and enter Group Code tttttta. The Detroit Marriott is also hosting a pre-race party and dinner the “Gobbler Fest” at 42 Degrees North Restaurant on Wednesday, Nov. 23 from 4 – 8 p.m. The cost is $15.
