LOS ANGELES -- This is only one of two Polish restaurants in the Los Angeles area that I know of. A friend of mine named George told me about it. So I looked it up online and then paid a visit. My entire experience at the Polka Restaurant was amazing. It reminded me of the Polish restaurants back in Detroit. It is traditional Polish food served up by a Polish family.

The location is not what you might expect. It is not a standalone restaurant. Instead, it is one of the businesses in a small strip mall, which includes a donut shop, dry cleaners, hair salon and video store. The restaurant is only a few minutes away from the Glendale Galleria shopping center, Forest Lawn Cemetery and the Griffith Observatory.

I ordered the Golabki, which is stuffed cabbage. It came with two stuffed cabbage rolls, mashed potatoes, three vegetables (corn, carrots and broccoli), a salad, a soup and a chocolate truffle for dessert. I placed my order to go and I left with three containers. I could hardly carry it all! My meal was very juicy and tasty.

The service at Polka was pretty good. I think it could have been a little faster, but I understand since the inside of the restaurant was completely full with people. I will give them a break for that reason.

All of the meals are over $10. Remember, all entrees come with soup, salad and dessert so you get a very large amount of food for the money. Lunch prices range from $11.99-$15.99 while dinner prices range from $15.99-$19.99.

On a second visit, I came with my parents. I ordered the Golabki again, while they chose the Pierogis. You can select one of four types: seasoned pork & chicken or sauerkraut & stewed mushrooms or potatoes & cheese or potatoes & cheese & jalapeño. I don't remember which one they chose, but they said it tasted amazing.

I would like to return one day and try the Nalesniki, which are crepes filled with sour cherries and cheese. My mouth is watering already!

The atmosphere is dark and dimly lit. Even during the day, the blinds are shut to remain intimate.

Reservations are recommended because there are only about 10 tables inside the restaurant, including booths and tables and chairs. There is a bench just outside the restaurant for folks who are ordering to go.

Guy Fieri taped an episode of the Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives at Polka's. (Click here to watch that episode online). He autographed a poster that is on the right side of the wall upon entering the restaurant. Former President George W. Bush and his wife also dined at Polka's. While I was there, a Polish television channel was conducting an interview with the owner.

Overall, I would recommend everyone to give Polka's a try. You won't be disappointed. Polish food is very hard to find in Los Angeles, so this place is a hidden gem. Try it out before going to a Dodgers game!

OVERALL RATING: A+
