We had lunch at Roma Café in Eastern Market on Tuesday. This restaurant claims to be the oldest Italian restaurant in Detroit, opening its doors in February 1890. It also sits on the original location since then, serving to a new generation of Detroiters. As we arrived, there was a complimentary valet service for parking. Although we parked along the side street in front of the place. We were greeted and seated in one of the many rooms of the place. It looks to me like it used to be a house, with several partitions or rooms dividing each section. They have a bar area behind the hostess podium with over 80 wine selections. The waiters wore tuxedos and were very friendly. We each ordered salad and canneloni dishes. The salad was prepared fresh at a console table nearby, as they were chopping away at the lettuce, added hard boiled eggs, tomatoes and garbanzo beans. They also added the oil and vinegar dressing before presenting it to us. Our main entrée came piping hot covered in hot melted cheese. It looked fabulous and was delicious as well. Everything on the menu for lunch was about $11.25 except the filet mignon was $18.50. The dinner menu is higher in price. The decor had wallpaper on the walls with tiffany lamps throughout. Seating was tight as it was packed when we got there. There were Italian pictures on all the walls. I would definitely recommend coming back again in the future. Roma Café is located on Riopelle Street in Detroit, on the north end of Eastern Market. OVERALL RATING: A For more information, visit www.romacafe.com. To view a copy of the menu, click here.
