Affleck and Justin Timberlake in Twentieth Century Fox's
"Runner Runner" - 2013
Justin Timberlake stars
as Richie Furst who attends Princeton University and finds that
he is unable to pay his tuition next week. He has done on-line
gambling to pay for his tuition so far.
As he tries to lure
college students to sign up for on-line gambling, he gets a commission,
until he gets called into the Dean's office and is reprimanded
that he stop it or get kicked out of school. Well with one final
gamble of all of his savings, $17,000, he gambles it all and loses.
He discovers he had been swindled and decides to find the man
that took his money and get it back.
Richie flies to Costa
Rica and confronts Ivan Block (Ben Affleck) personally to tell
him his story. Ivan is impressed with his creativity of keeping
the news private and offers him a deal. He gives him the money
back that he lost and offers him seven figures in the first month
to join his team and eight figures in three months. Hmmm.......what
do you think Richie decides to do?
With a chance to party
with the super rich and an interest in Ivan's girlfriend Gemma
Arterton (Rebecca), he takes the job. He eventually gets kidnapped
by the FBI (agent Shavers played by Anthony Mackie) and is told
that the Block's operation is shady and crooked. Furst eventually
realizes this and things start to go very badly.
Now he's gambling with
his life, and the tables are turned. Does he get out alive? You'll
have to see the movie to find out.
I thought the chemistry
between Affleck and Timberlake was unusual. It was not one of
Affleck's best performances, he was too slow to react in some
areas. He didn't seem the mean and conniving guy he was supposed
to be. Timberlake got beat up because of Block but he also didn't
get as angry as he should have gotten. It was also hard to connect
the gambling world with the characters. So I thought the movie
was ok, but not great.
