TWP., Mich. -- Now this is
my cup of tea--A visit to the Sanders Chocolate factory.
What a magical place where happiness is created on a daily
Chocolates was first opened by Fred Sanders on June 17,
1875. There were more than 57 stores in the Great Lakes
Region alone. He sold candy, fudge toppings, baked goods,
light lunches, along with desserts at fountain counters
including ice cream sodas, sundaes and hot fudge cream puffs.
was one of the first companies in Detroit to use electric
motors to run equipment. Fred Sanders hired Henry Ford to
work on these motors when they broke down, even before Ford
started Ford Motor Company.
1919, Ervin and Julie Morley opened a small shop and restaurant
on the east side of Detroit. It was a very popular place,
especially when it came to desserts. In fact, the candy
counter took the spotlight and the restaurant became known
among chocolate lovers as "Morley's Sweet Shop."
Ervin and Julie used copper kettles and cooked small batches
to ensure the finest possible confections from every recipe.
2002, Morley Candy Makers purchased the Sanders name and
recipes to add to its own tradition. Today Morley Chocolate
is home to the World Famous Sanders brand. The tradition
continues using quality ingredients and original recipes
in their award-winning recipes.
Sanders factory is located at 23770 Hall Road in Clinton
Twp., MI and offers free tours. The journey begins with
a 15-minute video of the story of chocolate, how chocolate
is made and how Sanders and Morley got their start right
here in Detroit. Following the video, you get to sample
some chocolate candy, then walk through the observation
hallway behind a glass pane window with a tour guide. Photos
and video of the factory were not allowed. My mouth stared
to water seeing thousands of candies on the conveyer belt.
tour ended with a visit to the Candy Shop where you can
purchase these delectable confections. I loved the tour
and would definitely recommend it.
tours are available Monday through Friday excluding holidays.
The factory is open from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Call for reservations
