SAGINAW, Mich. -- Sheila Marshall grew up listening to various musical genres including the likes of Led Zeppelin, Lucinda Williams, Lenny Kravitz and Willie Nelson. Some call her style of country a mix of Emmylou Harris, Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. After graduating college, Marshall released her first album, Beautiful for Situation. It took her to performances all over Europe and Asia. Her second album was titled Makes Perfect Sense. The new country star worked with Kyle Cook, lead guitarist for Matchbox Twenty, on her current record, What If I Was.

"Well, I started singing in church and the school choir," Marshall said in an exclusive interview. "I got a scholarship to go to college for voice. I did that for a little while, quit college and have been on the road ever since."

Was this your first time performing in Saginaw, Mich.? How did you think the show went?

"It is my very first time and everyone is so nice," she explained. "It's been a good time. I think it went great, we sold a lot of CDs afterwards. The crowd was great, couldn't ask for anything more."

What's the story behind your new single, "What Will You Say About Me"?

"I just put it on radio last month, it just hit radio," the new country singer added. "It was off my brand new CD, which was produced by the guitarist from Matchbox Twenty, Kyle Cook. I was very honored to be able to write and record with him. We're hoping you'll be able to hear it in Saginaw and everywhere else in Michigan."

Please give me some highlights of your new album, What If I Was.

"There are 12 songs on it," Marshall said. "There's one cover from John Prine, 'Angel from Montgomery.' There's a couple that I didn't write, but for the most part I either wrote it or co-wrote it with other writers. You can get that off my website, SheilaMarshallmusic.com."

What do you think of talent shows such as American Idol and The Voice?

"I actually like American Idol," she explained. "A lot of my friends are like, 'Why do you watch that?' I think it's a great opportunity to showcase their voice. I was actually on a show called Nashville Star a couple of years ago and I had a great time on it. It kind of gave me some exposure that I wouldn't have had before so yeah I think it's a great thing. There were 11 of us and I stayed until number six. I was there in Nashville for about a month. I lived in a house with a bunch of other singers. It was very interesting."

Marshall is hitting the road this summer to promote her new album and new single.

"We're actually going to be in Michigan for one more day and then we're back in Houston, Texas for a while," the new country star added. "Then, I'm back to Minnesota on the 20th and 21st. Just check out the website. Some see me."
