LOS ANGELES -- Today, I visited the Original Tommy’s World Famous Hamburgers at the intersection of Beverly and Rampart boulevards in Los Angeles. The restaurant is actually on the northeastern corner, however they also own the parking lot across the street. There are two Tommy’s serving stations on the premises – the original stand near the intersection and then a larger building just behind it. I ordered the chili hot dog, crazy right? It tasted just as good as a Pink’s Chili Dog. When I say that, I mean it was mouth watering. My chili hot dog came with onions, pickles with a slice of tomato on top. It can get a little messy if you pick it up so ask for a knife and fork. Make sure to grab extra napkins. Prices are very reasonable. I would recommend Tommy’s for a cheap date. My chili hot dog was priced at only $2.50 before tax. Hamburgers are $2.05 while cheeseburgers cost $2.45. Customers can add fries and a large drink to make it a combo meal and save extra money. Tommy’s also offers breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos and hash browns. Milk shakes are also offered for $2.05 each. Tommy’s is a take out style restaurant where one places their order, picks it up and then sits down. The service was extremely fast. As soon as I ordered, my food was ready. Outdoor seating is available on bar stools at the counter or one can eat in their car or take it to go. Tommy Koulax founded Tommy’s Hamburgers on May 15, 1946. He supported nearby Belmont High School by placing ads in the school newspaper and yearbooks. Before he died in 1992, he set up a scholarship fund for students at Belmont. By 2006, there were 30 Tommy’s locations. The original location that I visited is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are 32 locations across southern California and two in Nevada. Each one has different hours of operation. Check their website for more details. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Tommy’s. I recommend everyone to give it a try during your next visit to Los Angeles or on your lunch break for those who already live in southern California. I hope to return one day and try their world famous cheeseburger. OVERALL GRADE: A For more information about Tommy’s Hamburgers, visit www.originaltommys.com.
