"The Painted Veil"
Drama and Romance.
Not Rated.
This is a movie about
Walter (Ed Norton) and his wife (Naomi Watts) who
move to China to help with the cholera epidemic.
It's set in 1925 when
her father sets her up with Walter and soon
thereafter they are married. The courtship was short and she really
didn't love him, but marries him anyway. She eventually has an affair
with her husband's best friend, Charley Townsend, and he finds out,
but
keeps it under wraps. He threatens her with turning it into a scandal
or
she leaves with him to China. She decides to go to China with him.
He is an Infectious Disease
Doctor who volunteers to go to China to help
with the cholera epidemic. They live in this village in Shanghai
while
he treats people with the disease. She becomes bored with staying
at home
doing nothing so she visits an orphanage and works there teaching
the
children. She faints and finds out she is pregnant. She realizes
that
she has learned to love him.
The water is contaminated
so Walter closes down the well. He finds a way
to clean up the water and that makes the village people happy. While
helping the people, he contracts the disease himself. They run out
of
saline intravenous drip for him and he dies. He is then buried there.
She leaves Shanghai and
five years later has moved to London. She and her
child, meets up with Charley Townsend, and he wants to continue
where they
left off. She says she has to go and walks away. The movie ends.
This drama is a very
good story with magnificent pictures of faraway
China. I would recommend this movie.
