Miles Teller stars
as Sutter Keely, a high school senior in the process of writing
his college admissions essay. A few days earlier, he broke up
with his girlfriend Cassidy (played by Brie Larson). After a night
of drinking, Sutter woke up on the front lawn of his schoolmate’s
house, Aimee Finecky (played by Shailene Woodley, “The Secret
Life of the American Teenager”).
Aimee told Sutter that
she was in the process of delivering newspapers for her mother’s
route. Sutter said, ‘maybe we can help each other’
since he was in need of help studying for his Geometry class.
He had a blast helping Aimee with her paper route and she enjoyed
showing him how to do Geometry.
Sutter invited Aimee
to a high school party near a lake. She agreed and they went.
Everyone was drinking beer and talking to each other. Meanwhile,
Sutter spotted his former girlfriend, Cassidy, whom he still had
feelings for. Sutter introduced Aimee to another boy so he could
chat with Cassidy.
Later on, Aimee told
Sutter that she never had a boyfriend before. Sutter decided to
fill that void and be her first boyfriend. He invited her to several
parties and asked her to be his prom date. They both went to prom,
but Aimee said she isn’t a dancer. She said Sutter could
dance with Cassidy instead.
Shortly after prom,
the Sutter and Aimee got intimate. They took their clothes off,
started kissing and then had sex for the first time.
Aimee admitted that
she got accepted to a college in Philadelphia, but figured that
her mother wouldn’t let her move out. Meanwhile, Sutter
said that he hasn’t seen his father since he was a little
boy and wanted to meet him. The two agreed to a deal that they
would both face their challenges head on.
Sutter taught Aimee
how to be more confident and tell her mother that she was indeed
going to move out. He told Aimee to look her mom in the eye and
use some profanity to get the point across.
Later on, Sutter called
his father, Tommy (played by Kyle Chandler, “Friday Night
Lights”) and made plans to visit him. Aimee agreed to go
on a three-hour long car ride to meet him. When both of them arrived
at his apartment, Tommy acted like had a hangover and wasn’t
The three of them agreed
to meet at a local bar to have some drinks and talk. Tommy drove
separately from Aimee and Sutter. They had a few pitchers of beers
and then Tommy said he didn’t have any money and that Sutter
would have to pick up the tab. Then, Tommy left the table and
talked to one of the women at the bar. He told Aimee and Sutter
to leave the bar and that he would join them in an hour back at
this apartment. The time kept ticking, but Tommy never showed
up. He officially ditched his own son for another woman.
Will Sutter pass his
Geometry class in order to graduate? If so, does he make it into
college? You’ll have to see the movie for yourself to find
out. I’m not going to reveal that now.
Scenes for this movie
were shot in Athens, Ga. “The Spectacular Now” premiered
at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 18, 2013. It won the Special
Jury Award for Acting. The film had a nationwide release on Aug.
I really enjoyed this
new film. It featured several of my favorite actors including
Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Brie Larson and Kyle Chandler.
The plot kept moving to keep the motion picture exciting. It ended
on a cliffhanger so don’t be surprised if a sequel is made
in a few years.
