“This is it,”
Michael Jackson said in his speech in London while announcing
his planned concerts. “This is—the final curtain call.”
This Is It
was originally the name given to Jackson’s planned concerts
London’s O2 Arena. The concerts were designed to give Jackson
fans performances of their favorite songs, and which the artist
was to make a comeback off of as the superstar performer he was
not too long ago.
Despite Jackson was
unable to perform his concerts at London due to his untimely death,
he nevertheless delivered amazing rehearsal performances in the
film. This Is It showcased footage of Jackson’s rehearsals
from March through June 2009—preparation for the 50+ planned
concerts in London that were planned to begin in July.
This is it
included stage performances of a number of Jackson’s worldwide
hits, including Beat It, Thriller, Smooth Criminal—some
hits coupled with home video footage belonging to Jackson—and
of course, a performance of none other than Billie Jean. While
fans were unable to witness these concerts in person, most of
the rehearsal attendees were none other than the background dancers
and stage performers—who cheered on what has repeatedly
been dubbed the greatest entertainer that ever lived.
One of the most amazing
things about the film, aside from all of the special effects,
technology and background dancers—was Jackson himself. At
the age of 50, Jackson dances, sings and showcases moves similar
to the way he did over 20 years ago—in his prime years.
Still, while Jackson does showcase a lot of his older hits (which
by all means, are still amazing), fans should be in awe with all
the new elements This Is It has to present.
This Is It
was released in theatres October 28, 2009. However, given the
movie’s successful racking in of $101 Million worldwide
in its first-week opening, Sony has extended the movie beyond
its planned 2-week play, so This Is It still playing
at a theater near you.
