"Trance" is directed by Danny Boyle and stars James McAvoy as Simon Newton, Rosario Dawson as Elizabeth Lamb, the hypnotherapist and Vincent Cassel as gang leader Franck.

Simon is a fine art auctioneer at Delancy's Auction House and when they display Goya's "Witches in the Air" painting worth 50 million, four thieves attack the room with smoke bombs and guns and try to steal the painting. However, Simon cuts the painting out of its frame and hides it. After a chase, they clunk him in the head, and he can't remember where he hid it.

Then, the gang goes to his apartment and tears up the place trying to find it. With no luck, they torture him but he still can't seem to remember. So the thieves turn to hypnotherapist, Elizabeth Lamb, to try to hypnotize him to get information. He is wearing a wire so the thieves can hear the whole conversation while waiting in their van.

As Elizabeth notices that he is wearing a wire, she holds up cards and asks if he is in trouble. He nods. She tells him that she can help. She tries to unlock the secret that he is keeping inside. She eventually meets the gang and wants part of the action. Now she is playing a dangerous game.

Elizabeth remembers Simon from a year and a half ago when he came into her office with a gambling problem. Simon's heist was to settle his gambling debt.

But he overhears the gang saying that after they get the painting, they were going to kill him anyway. So he runs, but all the doors are locked, so he called Elizabeth and tells her where he hid the painting. But it was a dream.

Maybe there are some things that is better not to remember. The toughest secrets are the ones we keep from ourselves. What the viewer has to figure out is: what is reality and try to put the pieces together. There are flashbacks from the past and Simon goes back and forth in his memory through hypnosis.

"Trance" is rated R for sexual content, graphic nudity, violence, some grisly images, and language. Scenes for this film were shot at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and throughout Dungeness, Kent, England.

You have to really be focused to try to follow everything. However, I thought it was a fairly good movie.

OVERALL RATING: B
