DUNDEE, Mich. -- Ty Herndon was born on May 2, 1962 in Butler, Alabama. He was signed to Epic Records in 1995 and made his debut with the number one single “What Mattered Most”, which became the title of his first album. After graduating high school, he moved to Nashville. Then, he moved to Texas 10 years later and was named Texas Entertainer of the Year in 1993.

“I had to move out of Nashville to get a recording contract,” Herndon said in an exclusive interview. “I moved to Texas because my brother at the time said ‘All these guys are playing these honkytonks and making a great living.’ I’m starving to death in Nashville so I went out and started a band and got a record deal by winning the Texas Entertainer of the Year.”

Herndon was one of the performers at this year’s Mayfly Music Festival in Dundee, Mich. This was a return performance for Herndon who was the first star at the festival 10 years ago.

“I don’t think I actually knew it was my first time back when I did it but I think they told me later on it was the first year for the festival,” he said. “All I remember is these folks were amazingly nice. Then, I remembered the water behind the stage. So all the pieces came together. When I see the faces, I remember I know that I’ve been here.”

“What Mattered Most” was Herndon’s first single and it went all the way to the top of the Billboard Country charts.

“With all the years that have gone by now, I can definitely tell you to this day it is about a great song,” Herndon responded. “It’s about people connecting with a great song. Great promotion team, great label, great song. All the elements were there to make a great birthday cake that I celebrated a number one on the top of it.”

The country singer is working hard on his next album and is writing all of the songs on it.

“I wrote everything on the new album and that’s the first time that’s happened,” he said. “Probably because I went back to my roots as a country/bluegrass/soul record. Attached soul onto it cause that’s how I sing. It really is a great work of songs. I’m starting to record next week so I don’t think I have been excited about making a record since the first one.”

As for a name for the record, Herndon says it will be called “The Man I Am Today.”

“You guys look for the new record,” he added. “I appreciate it, thank you.”
