The movie starts out with a two-minute montage about Detroit’s own Kristen Bell, who reprises her role as Veronica Mars, and sums up the TV series for those who haven’t seen it. Mars is a private investigator at her father’s P.I. firm. I am one of the few people who haven’t seen the series so it helped me get caught up to speed. The movie featured all of the same characters that were on the popular show.

Then, Veronica goes on a job interview at the law firm Truman-Mann and Associates in New York City. She was interviewed by Jamie Lee Curtis (Gayle Buckley) and a few others. Seconds later, Mars gets a phone call from her friend Logan (Jason Dohring) who needs her help finding a lawyer in the fictional town of Neptune, Calif.

Logan was accused in the murder of Carrie Bishop, who became a successful pop star known as “Bonnie DeVille.” The murder was all over the news and on magazine covers. So Mars flew out to California and offered to help. She reunited with her father, Keith Mars, who was working on uncovering the corruption of Sheriff Dan Lamb.

Veronica begins the death investigation on her own. She conducted several interviews with witnesses, the police and the sheriff’s. Mars used listening devices and a camera with a long lens to gather evidence. Meanwhile, she kept getting calls from the law firm for her to return to NYC and start working.

Mars was dragged to her 10-year high school reunion by some of her friends. During the party, she learns that Carrie’s death is connected to the death of her best friend, Susan Knight, who disappeared from a boat nine years earlier. A fight breaks out at the reunion so Veronica uses a lighter to set off the sprinklers. Then, she went to an after party and interviewed Dick Casablancas, Luke Haldeman and his fiancée Gia Goodman, and Stu "Cobb" Cobbler, who were with Susan and Carrie on the boat the night Susan disappeared.

Will Logan be charged with Carrie’s murder or will be he found not guilty? Will Veronica ever land a job as an attorney in New York City? Those are two questions you’ll be able to answer at the end of the film. I’m not going to tell you right now. That’s for you to discover when you see the movie. Hint: Stay until the end of the credits because there is a special scene waiting for you.

I really enjoyed this film. It was sort of like a murder mystery type of story similar to what you might see on “48 Hours” or “Dateline NBC.” Bell told reporters during the Hollywood premiere that this film was the first to be entirely funded on Kickstarter. Apparently $5 million wasn’t enough money because I had to travel 30 minutes to see it. The theaters in my area didn’t get a copy of the movie. I think this film deserves a wide release. In the meantime, look for it on DVD and Blu-Ray on May 6, 2014.

OVERALL RATING: A
