For thirty-five years,
he has been the best at what it does, but what he does isn't pretty.
Now, 2009 marks an pivotal year for Wolverine, as he not only
returns to the big screen this summer in X-Men Origins: Wolverine,
but on the small screen in the latest X-Men cartoon entitled Wolverine
and the X-Men. This time, the gruff, brooding loner finds
himself in the role of leading the mutant superhero team as they
tried to prevent a future war between humans and mutants under
the control of machines called the Sentinels through a vision
from their comatose founder, Professor Charles Xavier.
Vivendi Entertainment Canada has recently released an limited
edition of the first four of its 26 season one episodes -- including
the exciting, three-part opener "Hindsight", in which
Wolverine begins the task of bringing the X-Men back together,
which includes Beast, Cyclops, Angel, Emma Frost, and Storm as
they continue to protect a world that fears and hates them. The
show has already become a hit on YTV and Nicktoons, and it was
recently renewed for a second season of 26 episodes, currently
in pre-production.
This show continues to respect the mythology of the X-Men: dealing
with issues of prejudice and discrimination -- whether it is race,
sexual orientation, or even being a mutant -- yet learning how
to come to terms with being different by showing tolerance and
understanding. Whereas Professor Xavier lives by the ideals of
peace and nonviolence, Wolverine is lives by the motto of doing
whatever it takes to get the job done, even if it means taking
lives. But he does have humanity as well as morality -- never
indifferent to the suffering of others. Though he maintains his
tough exterior, he continues to have a sense of honor and loyalty,
and proving himself as an mentor, a friend, an leader, and an
hero.
The claws are out for Wolverine and the X-Men: Volume One,
available only in Canada on DVD. You can also catch more episodes
on Nicktoons, so check your local listings.
