DEARBORN, Mich. -- The SAE Detroit Section 2013 Ford Fusion Vehicle Event was held at the Ford Conference and Event Center in Dearborn, Michigan. Jeremy Goddard, SAE Detroit Section Chairman, opened the conference.

Hau Thai-Tang, Vice President, Engineering, Global Product Development from Ford Motor Company says the Fusion established a strong identity. We are optimistic of the years ahead. 2013 is the 150th anniversary of Henry Ford's birth. He pointed out a picture in The Saturday Evening Post, which was titled "Opening the highways of all mankind." That was Henry Ford's vision. This vision is timeless and just as relevant today as it was then. The new Fusion delivers the one Ford plan. We accelerate the delivery of new products customers want and value. One team, one plan and one goal.

Global sales volume is six million vehicles on all four platforms. The B platform features three, four and five-door sedans which includes the Ford Fiesta. Focus anchors our C platform lineup. C-D platform showcases Mondeo in Europe and China. The D platform is our mid-size to full-size lineup. Our product strategy resonates with global-target customers. "The 2013 Ford Fusion is truly a global car," says Thai-Tang.

The new Fusion is manufactured in five different plants around the world. It is the first mid-size vehicle to offer a broad range of powertrain choices. It has outstanding performance. We are excited and pleased to introduce the 2013 Fusion.

John Jraiche, Global Chief Engineer, Ford Fusion and Mondeo, Ford Motor Company says tonight we will look at new technology highlights. It's just simply beautiful. Motor Trend calls it America's sexy new stunner. Nothing speaks louder than success. The Fusion gas-powered vehicle lasts only 14 days on the dealer's lot, while the Fusion Hybrid lasts only nine days. The 2013 Fusion is the new face of Ford. It radiates a premium appearance and says it's a whole new ballgame. The new Fusion meets all global standards with a common design.

The exterior design shows off the sleek Fusion's silhouette. The sweeping lines shows that it is light on its feet. The body side mirrors are sculpted, not only to be beautiful but to achieve outstanding aerodynamics.

The interior design is great to sit in and seats five comfortably but with a sporty attitude and functional ergonomics. We swept the center stack forward and took 25 percent of the volume out of the IP (instrument panel) package. We trimmed significant size and weight of the seat but not the comfort. It is surprisingly roomy and great to drive.

There is MacPherson strut front suspension for a better ride and handling attributes. Controlink rear suspension provides outstanding impact isolation. The power assist system measures the driver's steering input, adapts to changing road conditions and helps compensate for directional shifts caused by steady crosswinds. It is engineered for quietness. The result is on par with premium benchmark series in the industry. The 2013 Fusion has eight airbags, four-wheel drive anti-lock brakes and Advance Trac with electronic stability control system all standard. It has a five-star overall rating and a top safety pick.

There is an integrated spotter mirror for blind spot awareness. Also cross traffic alert system to aid visibility and warns the driver of impending traffic while backing out of a parking spot.

Gil Portalatin, Global Electrified Powertrains Integration Manager, Ford Motor Company, was next to speak. He says the key attraction of the 2013 Fusion is the impressive fuel economy. The gas-engine lineup is 2.5L, 1.6L and 2.0L. The Ecoboost provides affordable fuel economy.

"Ford is leaving no stone unturned," says Portalatin. They offer hybrid and hybrid electric. Fusion Hybrid is now capable of traveling 62 miles on the battery alone. The lithium ion battery is built in Michigan. Portalatin says, "Of all the features we are most proud of, it is the outstanding fuel efficiency. Much of what we seen tonight was only a concept a generation ago."

"The social hour is the most important part of this event. We thank Magna for sponsoring the social hour," says Goddard. The SAE Detroit Section philosophy is to advance and share knowledge in all aspects of the automobile industry. You can do that by developing career skills that will benefit you on the job through a leadership role and connect with engineering students and young professionals in your region. He noted the upcoming events and networking nights.

The next SAE Detroit Section meeting will be the State of the Industry event on Thursday, Feb. 21 at the San Marino Club in Troy, Mich.
