DETROIT -- The Automotive Press Association (APA) announced the 2015 North American Car & Truck of the Year (NACTOY) finalists at the elegant Detroit Athletic Club (DAC) on Tuesday afternoon. The DAC has long been linked to the automotive leaders in Detroit. Denny Moyer, a partner at Deloitte & Touche, handed over the names to Mark Phelan.

Phelan, a Detroit Free Press auto critic and NACTOY juror, announced the 2015 Truck of the Year finalists, in alphabetical order:

  • Chevrolet Colorado,
  • Ford F-150
  • Lincoln MKZ

The 2015 Car of the Year finalists are as follows, in alphabetical order:

  • Ford Mustang
  • Hyundai Genesis
  • Volkswagen Golf

Could this be the year that Ford sweeps both trophies? As you may remember, Chevrolet won both awards last year -- the Corvette Stingray in the car category and the Silverado in the truck/utility category.

The awards, now in their 22nd year, are designed to honor new benchmarks in their automotive segments in areas ranging from design and safety to innovation and value for the dollar. Fifty-seven jurors from newspapers, television and radio stations, magazines and websites voted last week, sending their ballots to Deloitte, which kept the finalists secret until today.

The North American International Auto Show sponsored the special APA meeting today. Jeff Green, Bloomberg Business, announced the upcoming events for the Detroit Athletic Club.

Lauren Eisbrenner, board member, says we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the DAC. "Since its opening in 1915, it's been the root of our existence from day one. In just a few weeks, we will be celebrating a full year of celebrations," says Eisbrenner. She asked the crowd, "How many cars were produced in 1915? Several people called out guesses. The answer is 975,000, representing 90 percent of production. Every generation of the Henry Ford family has had a member with the DAC since it first opened in 1915 including Henry and his son Edsel Ford. GM founder, William C. Durant was a member of the DAC as were legendary GM leaders such as Charles Nash, Alfred Sloan and Charles Kettering."

Scott LaRiche, chairman of the NAIAS, says there will be 45 worldwide introductions at the auto show in Detroit. Tom Fabbri, DAC Board of Directors President, was presented the 1910 Historic Auto Show Poster to the DAC. He said he would find a place in his office to display it.

The winners will be announced at the North American International Auto Show on Monday, Jan. 12.
