SUMMER ROAD TRIP: Try the 72-oz. steak challenge at The Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, Texas

72-ounce steak from The Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, Texas

AMARILLO, Texas — The Big Texan Steak Ranch is home of the free 72-ounce steak. That’s right, it’s completely free–if you can finish the entire meal–in less than an hour. Otherwise, it will cost you $72.

When the contest, or competition began, it only cost $5 to enter it. You could get your money back as long as you finished your steak, baked potato, shrimp cocktail, salad, bread and butter within the time limit.

As you might guess, the price has gone up significantly since then. Fast forward to the present day and now it costs a whopping $72. That equals one dollar per ounce of steak.

Millions of people have tried and many have failed. But if you’re one of the 9,500 people who have finished the entire meal, you’ll receive your money back, a free t-shirt, your name on the hall of fame as well as on the restaurant’s website.

The restaurant first opened in 1960 along historic Route 66 known as “The Mother Road.” It became a great place to stop for hungry tourists and truck drivers. Now it’s accessible off Interstate 40.

Stop at The Big Texan Steak Ranch on your Summer Road Trip! Their address is 7701 Interstate 40 Access Rd., Amarillo, TX 79118. For more information, call 806-372-6000 or visit https://www.bigtexan.com/
