Detroit — Chevrolet introduced the 2024 Equinox EV during its press conference at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit on Wednesday. It will join the Blazer EV, Bolt EV/EUV and Silverado EV in the Chevrolet line-up.

“This is configured in a front wheel drive and we have an E all-wheel drive,” said Matthew Purdy, chief engineer on the Equinox EV. “The front wheel drive is 210 horsepower when you go to the E all-wheel drive it goes to 290 horsepower. We do have two battery configurations–we have a small and a large battery. With the small battery in a front wheel drive configuration, we’re talking around 250 miles. When you move to the large battery in the all wheel drive, it will be about 280 miles and then with the front wheel drive and the large battery, about 300 miles.”

The Chevy Equinox EV will offer about 34 miles per hour of charging on a level 2 charger, which is around 11.5 kWh. For those who decide to purchase the 3RS model, there is a 19.2 kWh charger that offers 51 miles per hour of charging. Owners who use a DC fast charging station can achieve 70 miles of range in about 10 minutes.

“I think one of the biggest highlights on the interior is the technology that we are offering,” said Arthur Louro at General Motors Design. “This comes with an 11-inch display for the cluster and the driver. We also have technology on the head-up display. We have the column-mounted electronic shifter which allows a lot of storage space. Because of the Ultium platform, this is a bigger wheelbase, it’s wider, it’s longer. This one we started from zero so it’s a totally different car. The only thing that they share is the name–Equinox.”

The Equinox EV 2RS model will begin with limited availability in fall 2023. Meanwhile, the rest of the line-up will be available in spring 2024. It will compete with the likes of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Kona EV, Nissan Ariya and the Volkswagen ID.4.

“We think this makes it the most affordable C-segment SUV in the EV space,” Purdy added. “We do have the SuperCruise technology that’s on this vehicle. It offers 400,000 miles of mapped roads between the U.S. and Canada. We also have the really nice 17.7-inch display which is powered by GM’s Ultifi system, which is our end-to-end software platform. We’ll be able to do over-the-air updates and downloads, fun apps. We will not stop innovating at point of purchase. We will keep innovating and learning and provide that to the customer.”

Pricing for the Chevrolet Equinox EV will start at around $30,000 for the 1LT model. However, pricing is not yet available for the other four models.
