ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With snow falling outside as the evening approached, a screaming woman in a slurpee outfit paraded up and down the sidewalk while waving brochures in the faces of students and passersby. On a Thursday in Ann Arbor, one would think this is just another example student life antics as the winter trods on. Instead, it served as the announcement of something that has been rare in that part of the University of Michigan campus: a 7-Eleven retail location.

The festivities, according to Field Consultant John Walker, were meant to give the 7-Eleven a formal opening one month after it actually opened. We [usually] do it that way, a soft opening and then a grand opening,” said Walker.

To mark the occasion, representatives of the store were on hand to give out free hot dogs, brochures for other free food throughout the next week, and chances to win prizes via contest.

Back outside, Walker and other representatives stood together to finally cut the ribbon while customers clamored in and out the door. What’s further significant about this 7-Eleven is that, according to Walker, This is the only hot food program at a 7-Eleven in Michigan.”

For the students coming through, the services make for something fresh in the area. “You had to go to Meijer to get this kind of convenience,” said Vishesha, who came in with friends to grab several different snacks.

In providing a new stop for quick to find products, another customer rushing out the door described 7-Eleven’s new contribution as “Like a dream… a beautiful dream.”

Editor's Note: Another 7-Eleven store is set to open this spring at 704 S. Main Street, also in Ann Arbor.
