LAPEER, Mich. -- Aaron Tippin is best known for the hits “You’ve Got to Stand For Something”, “Where the Stars and Stripes and Eagles Fly” and “Kiss This.” He recently made a stop to perform at the Lapeer Days Festival on Friday, Aug. 21. Tippin got his start in country music by winning the TNN talent contest “You Can Be a Star.” “That was a lot of fun, it kind of kicked it off for me,” he said. “I went back to Nashville. That’s how it all started.” What do you think of today’s talent contests such as Nashville Star and American Idol? “I wish I had the publicity that those guys have now a days,” Tippin said. “Probably sell me some records without a record company. It’s really fascinating. I think that’s awesome. It goes to show you there’s a lot of great talent out there.” You’ve had many hit singles over the years. But which is your favorite to perform? “That’s kind of a tough question because I wrote most of my hits,” the country music singer said. “When you start trying to pick one baby over another, that gets pretty tough. I kind of let the folks decide which ones they like at the end of the night. Which one they cheer the loudest for instead of not just being picky.” His new album, In Overdrive, was released on Feb. 3 on Country Crossing Records. “East Bound and Down, Truck Drivin’ Man, Movin’ On, Roll On, Girl on the Billboard,” Tippin said. “It’s a ton of the old time greats everybody knows. I tell you, it’s a lot of fun.” What’s the story behind your single “Drill Here, Drill Now”? “It’s something I included on the truckin’ album,” he said. “So many of the drivers inspired me to write this song. It’s kind of about the yip yabbin jerkin around we got during the last so-called energy crisis. It was just time to speak up for the suffrage of America. It tells the folks what we’re thinking, how we feel about that injustice of that and trying to manipulate us into another lifestyle by jacking the price of fuel up.” Tippin started a new lifestyle initiative and a nutritional supplement line. “For years, I have been making music out here for 20 years and folks are always asking me ‘How I stay in shape? What do I use?’” the country music singer said. “It’s pretty simple now. Go to tippinnutrition.com and you can find out. We got a whole lot of supplements and tips on how to stay in shape. How to change your diet, how to get started in an exercise program. All kind of cool stuff you can do to change your life around.” How have sales been going so far? “Oh its great, great response to the web site. A lot of folks coming to the show saying, “Aaron, you know I’m getting started on this. I walked a mile yesterday and I’m trying to work it up to two hours.’ So it’s awesome to see people change their life and turn it around. It really is.” What are your plans for the future? “We’re completing an album on my wife, Thea, right now,” Tippin said. “She did a jazz/pop album that will be coming out real soon. That’s kind of what’s on the plate right now. In the future, we got other stuff that I want to do and other stuff it’s just time to do. Go to her myspace site or facebook to sample a little bit of that music.” Tippin will return to the area with a performance at a charity fundraiser at Laurel Manor in Livonia on Dec. 11.
