BIRMINGHAM, Mich. -- Carly Fiorina was the speaker for Monday's DEC meeting at the Townsend Hotel, where she talked about the growing economic problems that are crippling the entire nation. She spoke about having a strong need for a return of both common sense and good judgment in leadership -- which is definitely what is needed right now.

"While this is an era of hardship for many," she states, "it is also an era of virtually limitless possibility because of the twin forces of technology and globalization."

Fiorina said that America is undergoing a trio of important issues over the past decade: the dot-com bust, housing disaster and financial crisis, and that the solution is business responsibility as well as the proper role of government.

"Capital markets - the American capitalist system which I believe in - doesn't work unless there is transparency accountability. And I think now, businesses of all kinds in all places and business leaders must step forward and provide both. We cannot wait to be forced. If we do not step forward and proactively provide more transparency and more accountability, the consequences to business will not be what we want."

ABOUT CARLY FIORINA:

Carly Fiorina is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Carly Fiorina Enterprises but was also the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard from 1999 to 2005. She is the best-selling author of Tough Choices and is the main advisor for Republican Presidential candidate John McCain.

The Detroit Economic Club was formed in 1934 as a platform for the discussion and debate of important business, government and social issues. It is known internationally as a top speaking forum for prominent business and government leaders, who address members and their guests at the Club's 35 meetings a season.
