Many stores say they have the lowest everyday prices. Which ones really do? The AmericaJR.com Web Team went to find out. We checked prices on the same eight breakfast foods at 10 different retailers to find out. Here are the results. Do you know where to find the lowest-priced breakfast foods for your family? We're talking about items such as coffee, oatmeal, cereal and pop-tarts. You may think the cheapest prices will be at the grocery store. Our exclusive investigation will be an eye opener. We visited the following stores: Hillers, Busch's, Kroger, Meijer, CVS, RiteAid, Walgreen's, Target, Kmart and Wal-Mart from June 7 - 11, 2011. All the prices that we compared were regular prices. We did not take sale prices or clearance prices into consideration because those change each week. If a store didn't have the product we were comparing, there will be a non-applicable (N/A) in that column. It could also indicate the store didn't have the size we were looking for. The store may have a smaller or larger sized item, but the price will be significantly different than the products we compared. Here are the results to our exclusive investigation only on AmericaJR.com:

A lot has changed in the last year when we last did this investigation at around the same time. Many of the products that we checked the prices on are now coming in smaller packages. Some of the breakfast items are now in larger quantities. Most of the prices have gone up while others have gone down. The price of Folgers Classic Roast coffee has gone up by a few cents. Wal-Mart now has the cheapest price at $7.64, which is 31 cents higher than last year's low price of $7.33 at Meijer. However, Wal-Mart has lowered its price by 48 cents. The price has gone up by $2 on the coffee at Kroger and almost by $3 at Busch's. CVS dropped its price on Folgers by 70 cents, but still sells it for $11.29 each. The Wheaties cereal box remains at 15.6 oz. Wal-Mart continues to have to most affordable price for the last three years. This year, it is selling for $3.64 each, a 24 cent drop from last year. Busch's has raised its price on the cereal by 20 cents from last year. Kmart no longer carries Wheaties in any size box. RiteAid, Walgreen's and Target all offer the 10.9 oz box of Wheaties. In that size, Target has the lowest price at $3.64 each. The Cheerios cereal box remains at 14 oz. while it was a 15 oz. box in 2008. Target has tied Wal-Mart for the cheapest price this year at $2.84 per box. Most stores decided to lower its price on the Cheerios except for Walgreen's, which raised its price by 80 cents. The prices remained the same as last year at Kmart, RiteAid and Kroger. The price of Raisin Bran has gone down by 35 cents at Target, which now has the lowest price at $3.14 per box this year. Meijer, Kmart and Wal-Mart kept their prices the same as last year. The three drug stores we visited only offer the 15 oz. box of Raisin Bran. RiteAid has the lowest price of $3.99 per box among those stores. For the last four years, Wal-Mart has had the lowest price on the Quaker Oaks 18 oz. original round container at $2.12 each. The store was able to raise its price by 8 cents and still remain the cheapest. Target raised its price by 20 cents and Hillers increased its price by 11 cents per box. Meanwhile, Meijer lowered its price by 26 cents and Busch's dropped its price on the oatmeal by 11 cents. Wal-Mart now offers the lowest price on the 17 oz. box of Frosted Flakes, the first time since we've been comparing prices in 2007. Target and CVS both raised their prices by 50 cents, Meijer increased its price by 30 cents, Busch's jumped its price by 14 cents. In a strange move, Hillers dropped its price by $1.18 cents on the box of cereal. RiteAid, Walgreen's and Kmart only offer the 14 oz. box of Frosted Flakes. Kmart has the cheapest price among those three stores at $4.19 each. The Pop Tarts 8-pack frosted strawberry flavor is now the cheapest at Kroger, which sells it for $1.99. Most of the stores raised their prices on the Pop Tarts including RiteAid by 30 cents, Wal-Mart by 26 cents, Hillers, Busch's and Meijer by 20 cents and Target by 10 cents. CVS dropped its price by 12 cents from $2.79 in 2010 to $2.67 in 2011. The Quaker Oatmeal 10-pack flavor variety is now the cheapest at Wal-Mart for the first time in five years at $3.00 per box. Hillers has lowered its price by $1.34 and Busch's dropped its price by 16 cents since last year. Meanwhile, CVS increased its price by 50 cents and Meijer has raised its price by 16 cents. Target previously had the lowest price for the last four years. However, this year it raised its price by 5 cents more. Hopefully, this report will influence your shopping decisions. If you are on a budget, now you will know where to get the best deals on breakfast foods for your family. Even if you aren't on a budget, this report should make you think twice about where to get the best value for your money. This proves that the grocery store doesn't always have the cheapest price on groceries. To summarize: Wal-Mart has the lowest price on six items while Target had the cheapest prices on two items (tied with Wal-Mart on the Cheerios) and Kroger has the lowest price on the Pop Tarts 8-pack box.
