Many stores say they have the lowest everyday prices. Which ones really do? The AmericaJR.com Web Team went to find out. We checked prices on the same eight breakfast foods at 10 different retailers to find out. Here are the results. Do you know where to find the lowest-priced breakfast foods for your family? We're talking about items such as coffee, oatmeal, cereal and pop-tarts. You may think the cheapest prices will be at the grocery store. Our exclusive investigation will be an eye opener. We visited the following stores: Hillers, Busch's, Kroger, Meijer, CVS, RiteAid, Walgreen's, Target, Kmart and Wal-Mart from June 12 - 15, 2012. All the prices that we compared were regular prices. We did not take sale prices or clearance prices into consideration because those change each week. If a store didn't have the product we were comparing, there will be a non-applicable (N/A) in that column. It could also indicate the store didn't have the size we were looking for. The store may have a smaller or larger sized item, but the price will be significantly different than the products we compared. Here are the results to our exclusive investigation, only on AmericaJR.com:
A lot has changed in the last year when we last did this investigation at around the same time. Many of the products that we checked the prices on are now available in smaller packages. However, some of the breakfast items are now in larger quantities. Most of the prices have gone up, while others have gone down. The price of Folgers Classic Roast coffee has gone up by two to three dollars from last year. Walmart is now tied with Meijer and Kroger for the cheapest price at $9.68, which is $1.84 higher than last year's low price of $7.64 at Walmart. It is important to note that Walgreen's raised its price on the Folgers by $2.70 from $12.79 to $15.79 per canister. Kroger and Kmart both lowered their prices on the coffee by 10 or 11 cents. However, CVS kept its price the same as last year, $11.29 per canister. The 14-oz., eight pack of Frosted Strawberry Pop Tarts are now the cheapest at Walmart, which is selling it for $2.12, an increase of eight cents from last year at that store. Hiller's, Busch's, Meijer and RiteAid have kept their prices the same as last year. Kroger had the low price last year at $1.99 per box, but it raised its price by 20 cents and is now more than Walmart. Walgreen's raised its price by 80 cents from $2.49 in 2011 to $3.29 this year. CVS was the only store to lower its price on the Pop Tarts from $2.67 in 2011 to $2.37 this year. The Wheaties cereal box remains at 15.6 oz. Last year's low price leader, Walmart, does not offer that size anymore. Three stores are now tied for the cheapest price of $3.99: Hiller's, Kroger and Meijer. Hiller's actually lowered its price by $1.30 from last year to meet the other two retailers. Kroger and Meijer actually kept their prices the same as last year. The only other store that offers the 15.6-oz cereal box is Busch's and they are selling it for $4.19, the same price as last year. The Cheerios cereal box remains at 14 oz. Once again, Target and Walmart are tied for the cheapest price this year at $2.84 per box. No change there. Most stores decided to lower its price on the Cheerios. The biggest price drop was at Hiller's which lowered its cost by $2.10 from $5.29 to $3.19 per cereal box. This is the first year that all 10 stores are selling the 14-oz. Cheerios since we've started this survey back in 2007. Walmart has continued to have the lowest price on this box of cereal for the last four years. The 25.5-oz. Raisin Bran box of cereal is now only available at three stores: Hiller's, Kroger and Walmart. The other seven stores are only offering different sizes of Raisin Bran. The low price leader is Walmart, which raised last year's price by two cents to $3.50 this year. Kroger is close behind at $3.99 and Hiller's is selling the box of cereal for $4.39. Walmart continues to have the lowest price on the 17-oz. box of Frosted Flakes, at $2.98 per box, five cents higher than last year's low price. Only two other stores are offering the 17-oz. box: Hiller's at $4.69 and Busch's at $4.49. Hiller's raised its price by $1.38 per box of Frosted Flakes while Busch's kept its price the same as last year. Kroger now has the cheapest price on the 10-pack flavor variety of Quaker Oatmeal at $2.99 per box. They lowered their price by 60 cents to beat Walmart by a penny. RiteAid, CVS and Target kept their prices the same as last year. Hiller's increased its price on the flavored oatmeal by $1.04 from $3.15 in 2011 to $4.19 this year. Busch's lowered its price by 90 cents and Kmart dropped its price by 40 cents. Walgreen's raised its price by 30 cents and Meijer increased its price by 10 cents per box. Walmart and Meijer are now tied for the lowest price on the Quaker Oaks 18-oz. original round container at $2.42 each. Walmart was able to raise its price by 30 cents and still remain the cheapest. Meijer lowered its price by 17 cents to meet Walmart. Kmart and Hiller's both kept their prices the same as last year at $2.99 per container. The biggest price increase was at Walgreen's, which raised its price by 60 cents from $3.19 in 2011 to $3.79 this year. Hopefully, this report will influence your shopping decisions. If you are on a budget, now you will know where to get the best deals on breakfast foods for your family. Even if you aren't on a budget, this report should make you think twice about where to get the best value for your money. This proves that the grocery store doesn't always have the cheapest price on groceries. To summarize: Walmart has the lowest price on six items while Meijer and Kroger have the cheapest price on three items. Target and Busch's both have the lowest price on two items.
