Many stores say they have the lowest everyday prices. Which ones really do? The AmericaJR.com Web Team went to find out. We checked prices on the same eight breakfast foods at 10 different retailers to find out. Here are the results. Do you know where to find the lowest-priced breakfast foods for your family? I'm talking about items such as coffee, oatmeal, cereal and pop-tarts. You may think the cheapest prices will be at the grocery store. Our exclusive investigation will surprise you. We visited the following stores: Hillers, Busch's, Kroger, Meijer, CVS, RiteAid, Walgreen's, Target, Kmart and Wal-Mart from June 7 - 11, 2010. All the prices that we compared were regular prices. We did not take sale prices or clearance prices into consideration because those change each week. If a store didn't have the product I was comparing, there will notice be a N/A in that column. It could also indicate the store didn't have the size we were looking for. The store may have a smaller or larger sized item, but the price will be significantly different than the products we compared. A lot has changed in the last year when we last did this investigation at around the same time. Many of the products that we checked the prices on are now coming in smaller packages. Some of the packages are now in larger quantities. Some of the prices have gone up while others have gone down. The price of Folgers Classic Roast coffee has gone down by a few cents. In addition, the packaging was made larger by 0.9 ounces. Two of the three drug stores, RiteAid and CVS have kept the price the same as last year at $11.99. This year, the cheapest place to buy the Folgers coffee is Meijer at $7.33 per container. Last year, Kroger had the lowest price at $7.44. Busch's, Walgreens and Kmart all lowered the price of the coffee by a dollar. The Wheaties cereal box remains at 15.6 oz. In 2007, the box was 18 oz. RiteAid, Walgreen's, CVS and Target do not sell the 15.6 oz. box of Wheaties. Of the other remaining stores, Wal-Mart has the lowest price at $3.88 per box. Busch's raised the price by 10 cents and Meijer raised its price by 20 cents for a 15.6 oz. box of Wheaties. The price didn't change this year at Hiller's or Kroger. The Cheerios cereal box remains at 14 oz. while it was a 15 oz. box in 2008. Wal-Mart has lowered its price by about 50 cents and is now the cheapest at $2.88 per box. Busch's and CVS both raised their prices on the box of Cheerios by about 10 cents. Hiller's, Kroger, RiteAid and Kmart kept their prices the same as last year. Meijer and Walgreen's lowered their prices on the Cheerios box by a few cents. The price of Raisin Bran has gone down a few cents at Wal-Mart, where it now sells at $3.48 per box. Kmart was the only store to keep the price the same. It is important to note that CVS and Target have not sold the 25.5 oz. box of Raisin Bran until this year. Kroger and Meijer lowered the price of the cereal while Busch's raised its price by 30 cents. For the last three years, Wal-Mart has had the lowest price on the Quaker Oaks 18 oz. original round container. This year, their price went up by 10 cents to $2.04. Hiller's, Kroger, Busch's, RiteAid and Kmart have kept the same price as last year on the oatmeal. Meijer raised its price by five cents. Walgreen's lowered its price on the Quaker Oats continer by 10 cents and Target lowered its price by 30 cents. Target and Meijer are now tied for the cheapest price on the 17 oz. box of Frosted Flakes cereal at $2.99. Kroger, RiteAid, Walgreen's and Wal-Mart do not offer the 17 oz. box. CVS and Kmart both lowered their prices on the Frosted Flakes cereal. Meanwhile, Busch's has raised its price by 66 cents per box. The Pop Tarts 8-pack strawberry flavor is now the cheapest at Wal-Mart for $1.78 per box. Last year's lowest price was $1.52 per box at Target, but the store raised its price by 50 cents. Hiller's, Busch's and RiteAid all kept the same price as last year for the Pop Tarts. Walgreen's lowered its price by 80 cents this year while CVS raised its price on the same box of Pop Tarts by 30 cents. Kroger, Meijer and Kmart each dropped their prices by about 30 cents on the same item. The Quaker Oatmeal 10-pack flavor variety has gone up in price at most stores. However, Target is the lowest price at $2.69 per box. Hiller's, RiteAid and Kmart kept their price the same as last year. Kroger raised its price by $2.04 per box in the period of one year. Wal-Mart lowered its price on the oatmeal by 12 cents this year. Busch's, Meijer and Walgreen's raised their prices on the Quaker Oatmeal by about 20 cents each. Hopefully, this report will influence your shopping decisions. If you are on a budget, now you know where to get the best deals on breakfast foods for your family. Even if you aren't on a budget, this report should make you think twice about where to get the best value for your money. This proves that the grocery store doesn't always have the cheapest price on groceries. To summarize: Wal-Mart has the lowest price on five items while Target and Meijer had the lowest prices on two items (they tied on one item).
