Chelsea
is a city in Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The
population was 4,398 at the 2000 census, at which time it was
a village. In March 2004, by a 995-226 vote, residents approved
a change in municipal status from a village into a city.

Residents no longer pay property taxes to adjacent Lima Township
and Sylvan Township as they had under the village government.
The city provides all services formerly provided by both village
and township governments.

The
Purple Rose Theatre Company (or PRTC) was founded by Jeff Daniels
in 1991. Originally known as the Garage Theatre, 'The Rose' takes
its name from Woody Allen's 1985 film The Purple Rose of Cairo starring
Daniels.

The
main performance space and administrative offices occupy a building
in Chelsea, Michigan once owned by Daniels' grandfather. The theatre
produces four shows every year on a 3/4 thrust stage in a 168 seat
house.

According
to the United States Census Bureau, Chelsea has a total area of
3.4 square miles (8.8 km2), of which, 3.3 square miles (8.7 km2)
of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km2) of it (1.47%) is water.

All
Sounds & Sights on Thursday Nights performances are held in
Chelsea, Michigan from June 16 to August 25, 2011 from 6:30-8:30
p.m. (plus July 28-30). Performances take place outdoors at various
locations throughout downtown.
