LANSING,
Mich. — Officials announce seven final acts for
the 10th annual Common Ground Music Festival, presented by Miller
Lite, to be held July 6-12, 2009. Darius Rucker, George Clinton
and Parliament-Funkadelic, Edgar Winter, Marky Ramone’s
Blitzkrieg, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Trailer Choir
and the BoDeans have confirmed their appearances at this year’s
festival week in Adado Riverfront Park.
Grammy award winner, Darius Rucker, will perform on the Pearle
Vision stage on Friday, July 10. Rucker first began his career
as the lead singer/co-writer for Hootie & the Blowfish.
Rucker has since crossed over to country music and released
his first hit, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think
About It,” co-written by Rucker with Clay Mills, which
soared into the top 15 at radio. He is also known for “It
Won’t Be Like This For Long.”
George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic will perform on the
Pearle Vision Stage on Tuesday, July 7. Clinton was the mastermind
of the bands Parliament and Funkadelic during the 1970s and
early 1980s, and became a solo funk artist in 1981. Clinton
has been called one of the most important innovators of funk
music, next to James Brown and Sly Stone. He was inducted to
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, with 15 other members
of Parliament-Funkadelic.
Edgar Winter and Marky Ramone’s Blitzkrieg will perform
on the Capital Region International Airport stage on Wednesday,
July 8. Edgar Winter’s music encompasses many different
genres, including blues, jazz, pop and rock. Winter is well
known for his hits “Frankenstein” and “Free
Ride.”
Marky Ramone is best known for the 15 years he spent with the
Ramones as a drummer, performing songs such as: “Blitzkrieg
Bop” and “I Wanna Be Sedated.” Since the Ramones
retired in 1996, the Ramones became the first punk band to be
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and Marky
has begun touring with his new band, Marky Ramone’s Blitzkrieg.
Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, often associated with
Bruce Springsteen, will perform on the Capital Region International
Airport stage on Saturday, July 11. Southside Johnny and the
Asbury Jukes have been performing for more than 30 years; they
are well-known for the hit “I Don’t Want To Go Home.”
The band has produced 28 albums, one of which — “Hearts
of Stone” — was named one of the “top 100
albums of the 70s and 80s” by Rolling Stone.
Trailer Choir will also perform on Saturday, July 11. After
opening for numerous Toby Keith shows, and performances at the
CMA Music Festival and National Finals Rodeo, this band earned
About.com's Best New Country Duo/Group for 2008. Trailer Choir
is known for its songs: "Off The Hillbilly Hook,"
featured in the movie and soundtrack for Beer For My Horses;
"My Next Five Beers;" "Rollin' Through The Sunshine;"
"Rockin' The Beer Gut;" "Last Man Standing,"
used by ESPN and ABC in a national NASCAR promotion; and their
latest single, "What Would You Say," written about
the Sago Mine disaster.
The BoDeans are taking the stage on Saturday, July 11 as well.
This American-roots rock band is well known for the Party of
Five theme song, “Closer To Free.” The song made
it into Billboard’s Top 10 and earned an ASCAP award in
1996 for being one of the most played songs on the radio that
year. The band is also known for its hit “If It Makes
You,” which made it to the top ten charts and stayed there
for weeks.
