Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels Band to perform at Common Ground Fest in Lansing
LANSING, Mich. -- Trey Songz, Rick Springfield, Theory of a Deadman, LL Cool J, Melissa Etheridge, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Charlie Daniels Band are among the headliners for the 12th Annual Common Ground Music Festival. It will take place from July 11 - 17, 2011 at Adado Riverfront Park in Lansing, Mich. It is always one of the best music festivals in Michigan, bringing in some of the biggest stars of music. Each night, there are several different genres of music offered on two stages. Tickets are now available for individual days and for week-long passes.
Other performers include Peter Rivera, Showdown, Life Support, The Verve Pipe, Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights, Marnee, David Nail, Brian Lorente, Kris Hitchcock & Small Town Son, Duke Tumator, Don Middlebrook & Living Soul, Outer Vibe, MSU School of Rock, Tonic, Hot Chelle Rae, Locksley and Finding Clyde. Additional acts that will perform on the main stage are Trav, Burton Cummings, Jay Jolley, Aaron Lewis, Blackberry Smoke, Black Stone Cherry, Downplay, DJ Z-Trip, Definition, Brilliance and Larry McCray.
"The line-up is pretty spectacular this year," said Malinda Barr, the official spokeswoman for the festival. "We've got a huge line-up for people. Common card tickets are still available at $89. They are not going up in price like they normally do after July 1st. Single day tickets are $35. They are also not going up after July 1st. You can come to individual concerts or you can come to the whole week. We have food and beverage vendors from the LCC school selling pop and water for a dollar or $2 up to high-end smoothies. Miller Lite is the concert promoter so [they] are bringing in Miller Lite beers."
In what ways will the festival be similar or different from last year?
"Well, the music will be different from last year," she added. "The layout on the grounds is different. The stages are going to be much closer in proximity to each other. The crowds actually back up to each other. You can get from one stage to the other much quicker and much easier. There's a whole bunch of new food vendors and new merchandise vendors. It's just going to be really cool. One of the things you can do to keep track of Common Ground is we have a free app for your smart phones for your Android phones and iPhones. Search for Common Ground and download a free app."
A lot of big names are coming to Common Ground this year. What percentage of them are national touring acts?
"There's national touring acts on both stages," the spokeswoman explained. "All of the headliners on both the Pearle Vision pavilion stage and the Auto Value Parts Stores stage are all national headliners. There's different levels of national acts that are doing the opening acts. We do have a wide variety of local bands playing as well on the Pearle Vision pavilion. There will be a different number of local acts from smooth jazz to contemporary and rock and even a couple country bands."
Most festivals are cutting back. Has the economy affected the Common Ground Festival at all?
"We're not necessarily cutting back anything," Barr said. "We have decided to not raise prices after July 1st like we normally do for our visitors and for our guests hopefully giving them a little bit of a break. We see ups and downs. When we went to a lit of single day tickets being sold as supposed to the common cards, we're able to accommodate a lot more people in different ways. They don't have to spend $89 a week if they only want to go to one or two shows. However, if you're planning on two or three, the common card is definitely a better deal at $89 versus $35 times three. It's kind of a better deal economically."
What were attendance figures like last year? What are your goals for this year's festival?
"We want to stay around 90,000 as we have been for the last couple of years give or take a couple," she added. "We hope to be right around that again this year."
How are the ticket sales so far this year?
"Really good, we are right on target with our common card tickets," the spokeswoman explained. "There's just a few left. We do sell out of those because there's a limited number of those. We will probably sell out a couple different nights for single day tickets. For the most part, especially the way the venue is set up now with both stages on the same side of the river, we'll be able to accommodate everybody who wants to come. Plan to come on down. Go to commongroundfest.com and get your tickets or you can get them at Star Tickets Plus as well."
