LINCOLN PARK, Mich. -- In the year 2000, Evelyn Cairns and her son talked about having a local car cruise downriver because this town is full of car people. At that time, they contacted the local newspaper about their idea and the rest is history. Fast forward to 2013 and thousands of people came out to enjoy the cruise.

AmericaJR.com was on hand for the 14th Annual Cruisin' Downriver on Saturday, June 29. The cruise was held on Fort Street through the cities of Lincoln Park, Southgate and Wyandotte. The classic cars drove from Southfield Road all the way to Pennsylvania Avenue.

Some of the cars that caught our eye included a '71 Ford Gran Torino Sport, a '69 Chevrolet Chevelle, a '57 Chevrolet Nomad, a rusted '48 Ford pickup, a '53 Buick, a '62 Ford Falcon, a '74 Chevrolet Nova, and an Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight. The Just Hearse'n Around car club from Hell, Mich. bought several of its hearses to the cruise this year.

I noticed a lot of police patrol from all three cities trying to keep it a safe event. No speeding, drag racing or laying rubber were allowed.

My husband and I found a great spot near Goddard Road to park our chairs. The cars were great and the weather was perfect. Some people set up tents, brought snacks and coolers full of cold drinks. There was also a hot dog stand to accommodate the hungry car enthusiasts.

We had an enjoyable time at the cruise and I would definitely recommend it.

Cruisin' Downriver is just one of 16 automotive-related events across southeast Michigan known as Autopalooza. Concours d'Elegance of America and RM Auctions Vintage Motor Cars are the next two events, which are scheduled for July 27 and 28 at The Inn at St. John's in Plymouth, Mich.
