ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Ann Arbor's Michigan Theater saw a packed house in its Main Auditorium Monday night, thanks to combined free admission and the presence of one of televised journalism's most notable figures: Dan Rather.

On hand to speak about his new book, Rather Outspoken, and to open the forum in a followup Q&A session, the acclaimed newscaster formerly of CBS News was open on the events covered in this autobiographical work that shaped him and the events and topics he helped to shape in the minds of many through his coverage.

The topics were of great length in terms of Rather's life and work, starting with the people who motivated him into reading, writing, and reporting interests as a young Texas kid. Most pivotal of these figures, he clarified, was his wife Jean, whose influence on him was summed up in an awkward yet amusing anecdote.

The story goes, as Rather told it, that Jean spent an extensive period chatting up a former significant other named Luther who managed a convenience store they were parked at. Quipping how if she married the owner then she would have ended up helping to operate it, Jean shot back that Luther instead would've been the anchor of CBS News had it turned out like that.

The career that Rather undertook was well voiced, and the end of that CBS News tenure was treated as one that left him "baffled. Yes, I was hurt. But it's all in the past now."

He is not unemployed. Rather, he currently hosts and edits a weekly newsmagazine called Dan Rather Reports on the cable/satellite channel HDNet.

The journalist also made an appearance earlier in the day at the Burton Manor Banquet and Conference Center in Livonia, Mich.

Rather Outspoken, available now, is released through Grand Central Publishing, Inc.
