Detroiters head to the Polls to Narrow the Field

by Jason Rzucidlo
AmericaJR@AmericaJR.com

On Tuesday, residents of the city of Detroit went to the polls to narrow the field of candidates running for mayor and the city council among others in the primary election.

There was 12 candidates running for mayor of Detroit. The top four were current mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, Freman Hendrix, Sharon McPhail and Hansen Clarke. The others received less than 1% of the vote.

The top two candidates who won the primary are going to move on to the general election in November. The Mayor's salary is $176,176 and is a 4-year term. Freman Hendrix and Kwame Kilpatrick are moving on.

If you recall, Freman Hendrix was the deputy mayor under Dennis Archer, previous to the current Kwame Kilpatrick. His campaign slogan is called "Leadership That Works."

Kwame Kilpatrick has come under fire recently. With his spending on the city-issued credit card and the new Lincoln Navigator for his wife, Detroiters are looking for a change. He also fired hundreds of police officers and fire fighters. His slogan is "Standing Strong...for Detroit!"

One of the proposals in the city of Detroit was to re-open the Belle Isle Aquarium. Yes won with 110,615 votes or 88%. Only 12% of voters in Detroit wanted to keep it closed. Was it a mistake by the mayor?

The City Clerk position will be open this November. Once again, the top two condenders will continue to the Nov. general election. They are Jackie Currie, who is the incumbent, and Janice Winfrey.

Other elections in the city of Detroit include the Board of Education, District members and the all-important city council. There was a field of 120 candidates on the ballot for the Detroit city council. What does that tell you?

If you are President of the City Council, your salary is $76,910. It is a 4-year term just like the mayor. The top 18 candidates from the primary will move on to the general election. The top six vote-getters were incumbents.
