DETROIT -- Famed author Elmore Leonard passed away in his home in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. from complications of a stroke Tuesday at the age of 87.

Several of Leonard's best-selling books have crossed over to the big screen, which included Get Shorty with John Travolta as Chili Palmer; Jackie Brown with Pam Grier and Samuel L. Jackson, and Out of Sight with George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez about the romantic cat-and-mouse game between escaped criminal Jack Foley and U.S. Marshal Karen Sisco, which led to a short-lived television series on ABC with Carla Gugino in the title role.

The FX series Justified, partly based on Leonard's short story Fire in the Hole, stars Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens, a maverick U.S. Marshal who enforces his own brand of law and justice in his Kentucky hometown.

Married three times, Leonard is survived by his five children, 13 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will take place from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23 at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home at 1368 Crooks Rd. in Clawson, Mich. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Holy Name Church at 630 Harmon in Birmingham, Mich.

Memorials can be sent to Maryknoll Sisters, P.O. Box 317, Maryknoll, NY 10545-0317.
