DETROIT -- The Fort Shelby Tower Apartments is currently accepting applications for leases at the building which was originally designed by renowed architect Albert Kahn. The Fort Shelby was completely remodeled into Detroit's only hotel/apartment residence. Fifty-six total apartment homes are a part of the complex along with two two-story penthouse sky suites above. The first leasers will be moving in their apartments during the middle of February.

The Fort Shelby is located at 527 W. Lafayette Blvd. between First Street and Third Street in downtown Detroit. There are 56 total units including 12 one bedroom apartments, 42 two bedroom apartments and two penthouses. Apartments are located between floors 11 and 21 of the historic building.

"We want people to know we're open," said Dana Farrell, residential manager at the Fort Shelby Tower Apartments. "This is an exclusive community. Residents will receive hotel amenities. This is a lifestyle for empty-nesters and young professionals -- much like a Chicago lifestyle."

Leasers are currently selecting their floors and units. The first leasers are moving in mid-February with more scheduled throughout the year. Apartments are still available. The minimum length of stay is three months.

The apartment homes range from 939-square feet to 1,848 square feet. Penthouses range from 2,097 to 2,231 square feet. Corporate suites offer one bed and one bathroom. There are five units per floor so residents will only have one close neighbor.

Amenities include designer cabinetry and lighting, granite countertops, carpeting, in-home washer and dryer, deluxe appliances, a private elevator for residents and master bathrooms. All residents can use DoubleTree Hotel amenities including the fitness center, wake-up calls, dry cleaning, catering, concierge, doorman, valet parking, room service and housekeeping.

On site dining options include Finn & Porter Restaurant, located in the hotel lobby. The restaurant offers steak and seafood along with wine and a martini lounge. The Sushi & Round Bar is another room service option for residents. The Bearclaw Coffee Cafe is also located in the lobby. Staff members will deliver coffee to residents.

"We're attracting a lot of the downtown community," said Farrell. "The interest has been terrific."
