DETROIT -- Although the DoubleTree Guest Suites Fort Shelby Hotel is already open, official grand opening festivities are set for Thursday, Feb. 26. The hotel features a total of 203 guest rooms, which includes three VIP suites. The DoubleTree Guest Suites are known for its warm, chocolate chip cookies upon arrival. The Fort Shelby was originally designed by renowned architect Albert Kahn and has been transformed into a modern-day hotel.

Grand opening festivities are being called "A Drive Through Time" and will highlight the building's history. There will be food stations, live bands, DJs and more. It is a private fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House.

The Fort Shelby is located at 527 W. Lafayette Blvd. between First Street and Third Street in downtown Detroit. The hotel also includes a 21,000 square foot conference center with two ballrooms and 19 breakout rooms for meeting space. It is 22 stories high with a basement floor giving it a total of 23 floors.

"The average guest room is about 650 square feet," said Bill April, director of sales and marketing at the DoubleTree Guest Suites Fort Shelby. "There are 10 different variations of guest rooms on every floor cause it's a very boutique-style hotel. I have two ballrooms. Each do approximately 200 people."

All rooms within the hotel are suites. Each comes with a living room and a bedroom, two queen beds or a king-sized bed, a pull-out sofa bed in the living room. Additional amenities include two flat-screen TVs, wireless and wired (CAT6e capable) internet access, an alarm-clock radio with MP3 connectivity and complimentary coffee or tea in your room by Wolfgang Puck. A fitness center is also included with cardio euquipment, personal TV screens, free weights and a stretching area.

"Our prices are about middle of the market," the sales and marketing director said. "As a DoubleTree, our goal is not to be the most expensive hotel. We want to be an easy, comfortable hotel to use. Our prices are right about average in the middle.

The Finn & Porter restaurant is located on the first floor of the hotel. It offers steaks, seafood, chicken, salads, sandwiches and a sushi bar. Dinner ranges from $18 to $44, with lunch ranging between $8 and $18. Lunch runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A breakfast menu is also offered from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The Finn & Porter round bar is located right across from the restaurant on the first floor. The sushi bar is located within it. The round bar serves sandwiches, burgers and appetizers.

A Bearclaw Coffee Co. beverage shop is located on the first floor, directly to the left of the main entrance. It is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Preparation for the renovations began in June 2006. Financing for renovation closed in May 2007 with construction work beginning the next month. The hotel reopened on December 15, 2008.

"Just Today, I had a site inspection of a couple of sales managers from other hotels in town and they said, 'Wow, I didn't expect it to be so chic'," said April. "It has more color and it is more vibrant than our competitors. I think the biggest difference when you walk in the door here is you're immediately greeted by the warmth of DoubleTree. You have the cookies, the coffee shop right there."
