ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Katie Armiger was born on June 23, 1991 in Sugar Land, Texas. She started writing poetry at the age of 10. By 14, she had her first two songs already written. The new country music singer was signed to Houston-based Cold River Records in 2007. Her debut album was produced by Mark Liverius, who also produces albums by Lorrie Morgan and Trick Pony. Armiger has been visiting 24 malls across the country to perform, sign autographs and meet the fans. Meanwhile, she has started writing for her third album.

Armiger won a Houston city-wide competition for young country singers. There were over 150 boys and girls aged 9-17 in the competition. She won $1,000 and the chance to record a two-song demo.

"I won the competition when I was 14 years old and it was called the Best Country Singer in Houston," said Katie Armiger in an exclusive interview at Briarwood Mall. "That's kind of how my career actually got started. After I won the competition, I started going to Nashville and met with producers, started songwriting and doing albums and things like that. It really hit it off."

The new country artist released her debut self-titled album on August 14, 2007.

"It was pretty amazing actually," Armiger said of the recording process. "It's one of those things that I think every little girl wants to go to Nashville and have all those things. But to actually be there and record an album is a dream come true."

Armiger released her second album, Believe, in 2007. Now, she is already working on her third album.

"I am, well, I've been writing for it," the new country artist said. "We're going to start recording in the fall after we're done with the mall tour. It's going to be really cool. I really like the new music that's coming out."

She has many musical influences including Martina McBride, Linda Rondstadt and Patsy Cline.

Armiger has spent her summer by touring 24 different Simon-owned shopping centers around the country. It all started on June 23 and it runs through August 16. She has visited cities such as Houston, San Diego, Denver, Orlando, Los Angeles and Nashville.

"It's been going great," the 18-year-old singer said. "The plan when we thinking of this mall tour was to have more and more people out at each show and it's really gotten that way. From the first show to where we're at right now just more and more people are coming out. It's going great."

Fans have showed up at malls to watch her 45-minute concerts. The first is at noon with the second performance later at 6 p.m. Fans also have the chance to win a $500 mall gift card at each performance. Many of her fans wait in line to get autographs following the show.

"They're reacting really amazing," the new country singer said. "It's kind of crazy because going into malls in these markets, they're a lot of people who have never even heard my music but will come up to me in the mall. Country fans and people who don't listen to country and will be like 'You know what? I really like your music.' So couldn't really ask for anything else."

Armiger's new single is "Gone", a track off her second album, Believe.

"'Gone' is basically the story of my life right now," she said. "It's a song that I wrote about leaving Texas and moving to Nashville and following my dream, which is what I'm doing."

The new country artist did a web series on GAC.com called "Kapturing Katie" last year.

"GAC is a sponsor on the tour," the 18-year-old singer said. "They're great, great folks. They're actually coming out to one of my shows this next week. I'm super excited about that."

Armiger was featured as the Discovery Artist of the Week on iTunes in July 2008.

"It's pretty crazy," she said. "I'm always on iTunes looking at new songs and new artists. To actually be that Discovery Artist on there when you open up the page is a pretty crazy feeling. It's like wow, that's my face. You know that you made it then."

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years musically?

"I really see myself doing what I am now and that's what I love singing, performing," Armiger responded about her future goals. "I would say my biggest one is to sing at the Grand Ole Opry. I really want to do that."
