DETROIT -- The winner of three Tony Awards, LaCage Aux Folles comes to the Fisher Theatre for two weeks only. The music an lyrics are by Jerry Herman and the book by Harvey Fierstein. Before the performance, one of the drag queens entertained the audience as people found their seats.

The production tells the story of Georges (George Hamilton) the owner of a drag nightclub in St. Tropez on the Riviera. Georges welcomed everyone to the La Cage and the cabaret show began. Albin (Christopher Sieber), his wife, is a drag queen and has lived together with Georges for many years. Albin is the star performer at the La Cage and uses the name "Zaza."

Jena Michel (Michael Lowney) is Georges 24-year-old son from his affair with a woman named Sybil, comes to him to announce his engagement to Anne. Anne's parents wants to meet their daughter's in laws. However he has to lie because Anne's father is the head of the TFM (Tradition, Family and Morality Party) which engages in closing all the drag clubs.

Calamity arises when they arrive and Sybil was invited to portray a real family, however she doesn't show up so Albin dresses up and pretends he's Sybil. The truth eventually comes out and Albin says he's proud of who he is and sings "I am what I am," in defiance.

Back at the apartment, Anne's parents plead with their daughter to leave her fiance. The ending will surprise you. La Cage is a family's struggle to stay together and be true to who you are.

The production included smoke, strobe lights and beach balls. Their costumes had feather boas flying everywhere. There was also a 25-minute intermission during the two acts. The storyline had lots of emotion, dancing and singing. The play began sharply at 8 p.m. and ended at 10:45 p.m.

Tickets are now on sale at the Fisher Theatre Box office or ticketmaster locations.

George Hamilton was fabulous in this production. It was entertaining and I would recommend it to all.
