Mich. -- Tinker. Hack. Invent. Make. was the
theme. The Henry Ford was the place to be for the 2013 Maker
Faire Detroit held on July 27 and 28. There were so many things
to do and participate in. It was my second year attending the
It featured two days
of ingenuity and creativity with over 400 makers who brought
their wares, ideas, inventions and solutions to this festival.
The Maker Faire offered everything from robots, flame shooters,
animatronics to solar-powered mechanical sculptures. A mega-sized
Mousetrap game and a huge Operation game were also featured.
The fire-breathing art car dragon was a sight to see. I couldn't
I like the idea that
you can actually make things while you're there. I made a sachet,
which is a closet air freshener. It can be used in your drawers
or hang it on a hanger in your closet.
The outdoor midway
offered the Maker Place where visitors could purchase DIY kits,
demonstrations of threshing machines, arts and sciences displays,
crafts faire, power racing and all kinds of robotics.
The weather was fair
for most of the weekend. It started raining at around 3 p.m.
on Saturday. Then, most of the people headed inside the Henry
Ford Museum. The indoors offered balloonists, woodworking displays,
more robotics and a needle arts zone.
I also enjoyed the
new exhibit on making of the World's Fairs of the 1930's. It
featured the cities of Chicago (1933–34); San Diego (1935-36);
Dallas (1936); Cleveland (1936-37); San Francisco (1939-40);
and New York (1939-40).
In the exhibit, I
watched a TV commercial that compared a new dishwasher with
doing dishes by hand. One woman in the advertisement said, "Can
you imagine? This lady reading a paper while her dishes are
being dried." I was so surprised. Nowadays we take it for
granted that every house has a dishwasher. This exhibit is a
must-see. It runs through Monday, Sept. 2.
By the time I was
done looking at the exhibits inside, I walked back outside and
it was sunny and beautiful. All of the rain had dried up fast.
I can't wait to go to Maker Faire again next year.
