It's
1958 and the Marvelous Wonderettes are about to perform for their
Super Senior Marvelous Dreams prom. The Wonderettes are Marley DelDuchetto,
Gretchen Bieber, Laura Hall, and Holly Davis. They're scheduled
for an open-ended run at the Detroit's Gem Theatre.
DETROIT
-- The
Marvelous Wonderettes, a three-time Tony Award winner, is now playing
at the Gem Theatre. It was written and created by Roger Bean. The
stage is set in the gymnasium of the Springfield High School Prom
in 1958. These four girls dressed in their pastel color prom dresses
get on stage and sing songs from the 1950's and 1960's.
Suzy
Simpson is played by Gretchen Bieber, Betty Jean is played by Holly
Davis, Cindy Lou Huffington is played by Marley Del Duchetto and
Missy Miller is played by Laura Hall. This ensemble of characters
sing songs like "Mr. Sandman, Dream Lover, Lollipop and All
I have to do is dream!" It is a non-stop pop musical as they
sing songs about their lives and loves.
The
Marvelous Wonderettes was written and created by Roger Bean. The
musical is directed by Hinton Battle.
Each
audience table was provided a voting ballot to choose the next Prom
Queen, which was collected by the Wonderettes.
There
is a 15-minute intermission. Then the second act was 10 years later
at their high school reunion.
I
thought the musical was not very interesting. There was too much
hyperactivity on stage. The girls' voices were high-pitched and
they sounded goofy. There was not much of a storyline and mostly
just music. I did know every song but it was too much for me.
I would not recommend this musical and the men in the audience would
call it a girly show.
Overall
Rating: D
