U.S. Transportation Secretary
Mary Peters Calls for Highway Improvements

Mary
Peters said: "The federal government’s role in transportation
should not simply be to pass out the cash. It must instead encourage
new investment, stimulate new innovation, and produce real results
– results that make a difference to you in your personal life
and in your professional life."

The
U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary said: "Over the
next few months, we’ll be unveiling more of the detail on
our proposals to create a coherent, dedicated, focused federal role
in transportation to encourage a wise investment strategy and to
deliver a higher level of performance in that transportation system
for the American people."

Peters
said: "Over 20 major public/private partnership projects are
at various stages of procurement right now, here in the United States."
