WESTLAND, Mich. -- Nestled along N. Wayne Road in Westland, a structure that once hosted moviegoing entertainment for decades under the name of Showcase Cinemas was demolished. The all-new MJR Westland Grand Digital Cinema 16 was built from the ground up.

On Friday morning at 9:30 a.m., representatives of both the theatre and Westland, including Mayor William R. Wild and MJR CEO and President Michael Mihalich, gathered to officially open the megaplex with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Just within minutes of the snip, attendees were already appearing out of nowhere to purchase tickets for the earliest showing features.

“We are… grateful for all the support we’ve received from the City of Westland and are proud to give them a modern, new, state-of-the-art, movie complex,” said Michalich. “Ascetically the Grand Concept has resulted in the finest MJR complex to date.”

Offering 16 screening rooms accompanied by 3,100 seats total, the Grand Digital is anticipated to draw movie ticket admissions close to 800,000 each of the upcoming years, according to press releases.

It is the perffect time for a new movie theater opening. Films such as Real Steel, The Ides of March and Harold & Kumar's 3D Christmas are now open. All three were partially or entirely filmed within the state of Michigan.

“The City of Westland has marveled as this incredible project has come to life,” Mayor Wild remarked. “The much anticipated grand opening of the Westland Grand has been the talk of the community and we are proud to welcome MJR Digital Cinemas.”

It just depends on what southeastern Michigan is most itching to see innovatively at the motion picture show, and how MJR can present it.
